Red Badge of Courage

by: Bethany Stotts, January 29, 2009

Just as students sporting t-shirts of Che Guevara are often ignorant of his bloody revolutionary record, so too it seems that champions of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade suffer from a peculiar form of “historical amnesia” promoted by academics and activists alike.

But in Professor Char Prieto’s case, the decision to continue lauding the Soviet-influenced Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade (VALB) stems not from ignorance of the these values, but their acceptance.

“After World War II the movement to stop Communism was rampant in the United States. Therefore, anything associated with Marxist views was censored,” argued the Professor of Spanish from California State University at Chico this December. “The members of the Lincoln Brigade who fought fascists in Spain were considered a threat to America and anti-patriotic and so it was [with] Langston Hughes and his literary works, especially the poems he wrote about race and social justice while he was in Spain.”

Prieto described how 1930’s “Negro Communist” Langston Hughes became sympathetic to Soviet Communism after visiting the USSR, which Hughes felt was less racist than the United States. “In 1932 he had traveled to Russia and there he started to appreciate Communism and not only praise socialist practices during the Depression, here in the United States,” Prieto said.

“This Russian trip influenced Hughes to sympathize with the socialist ideals in Spain,” she continued...

"...which Hughes felt was less racist than the United States..."

There's the problem right there. He FELT they were less rascist than the United States. He didn't bother to do some research into Soviet rascism so that he could THINK something on the subject, he just listened to the propaganda and went with his "feelings".

What a loser.

Those interested in what was really happening in Red Spain should read George Orwell's Homage to Catalonia (London: Secker & Warburg, 1938)

The Abraham Lincoln Brigade and other members of the Commie Loyalist faction in the Spanish Civil War fought against Francisco Franco’s attempt to restore stability to the anarchy the Spain had become.

Commies, Anarchists and other Leftists were carrying out anti-property, anti-capitalist, anti-religious attacks on All the institutions that make for a stable social order. General Franco wisely saw the need to act and restore order. Those who fought against him were either conscious members of the conspiracy or useful idiots. Thank G_d General Franco was able to prevail and save Spain from Communism.

ONE MORE “S” IN THE USA

Put one more S in the U.S.A.
To make it Soviet.
One more S in the U.S.A.
Oh, we’ll live to see it yet.
When the land belongs to the farmers
And the factories to the working men—
The U.S.A. when we take control
Will be the U.S.S.A. then. …
But we can’t join hands together
So long as whites are lynching black,
So black and white in one union fight
And get on the right track.
By Texas, or Georgia, or Alabama led
Come together, fellow workers
Black and white can all be red:

Put one more S in U.S.A.

—Langston Hughes, c. 1932

BTTT-Franco was a true hero of the 20th century. I would place him in the pantheon with Reagan, Churchill, and Thatcher.

Killed the commies by the thousands and drove them out of his country in bloody street to street fighting. He won and is hated because of it.

Did he really write that childish drivel? Was he considered a writer?

Thank you. Franco was a Great Man and a Great Anti-Communist who is so under-appreciated today. His insurgency and the executions that followed were necessary to save traditional, capitalist Spain from Communist-led Anarchy.

Actually, more reds were killed by other reds than by Franco’s troops. The Spanish Civil War gave us the terms “politically correct/incorrect.”

Indeed, Langston Hughes wrote that—and he received critical acclaim as a poet.

Probably true. Franquistas fought the Reds in pitched battle (Alcazar siege, etc) while the Soviet-led `Republicans’ were busy exterminating socialists, unionists, anarcho-syndicalists, and just plain anarchists. When defeat loomed, the Reds absconded to the USSR with most of Spain’s gold reserves.

“Political correctness” was originally used by `true’ Marxists to punish `false’ Marxists, and to enforce Party discipline, long before the left in America made it their chief weapon against anyone who disagreed from the right.

FWIW, it looks like today’s Spain is sliding downhill into typical Eurosocialism. So many died in vain.

When I joined the US Air Force in 1968, they had a long list of “Where you ever a member of...”. The Abraham Lincoln Brigade was one of them. Sure would like to have a copy of that list now. Guess when the O’Baminates are done with us, Freepers will be on a new list, too. ;o)

Agreed. The good thing about commies is their tendency to wipe themselves out.

From the history of Russia and China, nations seem to react against communism after a few generations, and after the great leader dies. So that’s a bright side . . . only 50 or 70 years of misery, torture and plodding horror before people get fed up and change things.
