"...to do the work of the military industrial complex." Is it just me or this phrase almost as annoying as "speaking truth to power." It's not just you. That expression became trite and empty long ago.

It is also the most misused phrase in speech history. In Eisenhower's speech that it is quoted from, he didn't warn us against it, he said to be vigilant they don't get to big, but to not fear it, it was a natural growth from a changing world where an arms industry was necessary for current and future wars to keep us ready.
