Edgar Allan Poe was plagued by addictions, and his life was cut too short. The mysteries of his life were as complex as those conveyed in his stories and poetry. Today is the 200th anniversary of his birthday.
A great novel about Poe’s death is “The Poe Shadow” by Matthew Pearl.
A literary genius, IMHO, and my favorite author!
I’ve been looking for a good book to read about Poe, is the Poe Shadow factual?
Poe's life and death have been shrouded in mystery which adds to the whole mystique (if that's not redundant) but the author, Matthew Pearl, does a very nice job of blending what we know about Poe, his family, his ambitions and the Baltimore melieu w/ a somewhat possible and entertaining who-dunit.
I would also recommend "The Dante Club" by the same author. It's a who-dunit centering around Longfellow's translation of "The Divine Comedy".
