Last September, Adele was the odd woman out of the British female neo-soul singer phenomenon. Duffy, Leona Lewis and Estelle had all scored big U.S. summer hits.

What’d Adele have? A brilliant but largely unheard album in “19” and a September gig at the Somerville Theatre that she ended up canceling due to a family emergency.
