Common Law marriages were recognized in most U.S. states until in a given state they were specifically outlawed. They are still legal in the District of Columbia, for example, because of what is now the District being carved out of Maryland when they were legal there. But in Maryland itself they have now been outlawed.

Usually there’s a time requirement for common law marriage. In California it is, or used to be, seven years.
