I disagree with him that the clash is an absurdity, he has a right to his own opinion. Just because he gives credit to evolution does not mean he is giving credit to Human Evolution. If someone asked him if we came from monkeys, I doubt he would answer with a, "Yes". He may be speaking of animal evolution (such as horses), but I'm not sure. It's a safe bet to say that the Catholic Church absolutely rejects any theory or ideology that denies final causes. If that's what someone means by "evolution", then no, it is not compatible with Catholicism in any way.

From my limited knowledge about the Catholic church, I believe they accept intelligent design not Darwin's theory. I think allmendream is making it up, it would not surprise me in the least.
