David Spade has donated $100,000 to the Phoenix police to fight Mexican drug cartels. Upon presentation of the check, Joe Dirt was quoted as saying "Is this gay?...Is this gay?"
Actor and one-time Phoenix resident David Spade has donated $100,000 to the Phoenix Police Department. The department will use the much needed funds to buy high-powered rifles to defend the city from the growing influence of Mexican drug cartels.
Through his publicist, Spade explained that "these guys need to be able to do their jobs, and I am just happy I could help."
Spade says he got the idea for the donation after seeing a story on FOX News. Phoenix police say Spade called asking to donate to their rifle program after he saw that officers, outgunned and desperate for more firepower, wanted to buy their own semi-automatic rifles.
Spade, 44, grew up in the Phoenix area and graduated from Arizona State University. The "Rules of Engagement" star has helped out cops before, donating $25,000 to the family of a fallen Phoenix police officer last year.
Whatta guy!
He’s a good man - and a true rarity in Hollywood.
Wouldn’t surprise me if he gets blacklisted over this.
When the Planet Hollywood restaurant opened at the Caesar’s Palace Forum shops many years ago, David Spade was one of the red carpet celebrities. My sister had won tickets to the opening ceremonies and I finagled my way to the front of the barriers allowing me access to the stars as they passed. David Spade was one snotty brat, refusing to sign autographs or have his picture taken. I was totally turned off by his attitude and swore I would never watch any show or movie with him in it.
I will have to change my own tune now. This story surprised me, in a very good way. Kudos to David Spade for his generosity to a cause that is sure to draw criticism from his peers. Unlike that vapid Hayden Panietteri with her crying jag over the dolphins, Spade has done a truly courageous thing.
I imagine you wouldn’t be too nice if you were going to eat dinner and had a bunch of whack-jobs (yourself excluded) screaming at you
I’d like to know more about how our mayor and city government so screwed up our city budget that it took a Hollywood celebrity to donate guns needed by our police. To me, that should make the headlines.
A Hollywood star who watches Fox News? Oooh, he’s in trouble now.....
Speaking of the movie Joe Dirt, it wasn’t that bad..
Well, they weren’t going into dinner. They were entering an outdoor arena where there was a show. Many of the other stars, including those who were much bigger than he at the time were gracious and friendly.
For example, Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenager, Steven Seagal, Charleton Heston, Debbie Reynolds, Steve Guttenburg, Kurt Russell, Goldie Hahn and so many more I can’t remember them all. They all stopped, shook hands, signed autographs and posed for pictures. They didn’t seem at all put out by the “screaming” whack jobs.
The entire event was for the “fans”. If he didn’t want to be there, he shouldn’t have been. At the time though, his career was pretty strong and maybe he felt he had to come across as a “big star”. Or it could have been immaturity, I don’t know.
But, my opinion is not as strong against him as it once was, I will have to take a closer look at him now. Also, celebs no longer hold the same fascination for me. I guess I’m older now and realized that they are just people, no more no less than anyone else.
I knew it would only be a matter of time before someone tried to resuscitate the quality of his work as an actor because of this.
Meanwhile: countdown to appearance of the word “Hollyweird”: 5...4...3...
A Patriot! Who knew?
