I don’t remember which of his albums it was but I remember a review of it that contained the following line: “Sometimes political messages don’t work, even in the hands of John Lennon. Or, should we say, especially in the hands of John Lennon.”

They were good filters of each others' crap, well except for some of the stuff on "The White Album".

For me The Beatles apex was between the end of 1964 through 1966 with Help , Rubber Soul and Revolver . Singles like Rain , Ticket To Ride , Eight Days A Week ...
