Well, here we go again -- Ben Smith of Politico rushing breathlessly to don the kneepads with this incredibly dishonest spin:
Unlike many others, Obama has not enriched himself off the machine; the closest he came was accepting Tony Rezko's apparent help in buying a house. He backed ethics legislation that made the traditional ways a bit more inconvenient, though the fact that State Senate President Emil Jones, a leading machine soldier, backed it suggests it wasn't exactly revolutionary. And he kept himself apart from many of the transactions -- and other insiders, seeing his promise and not wanting to taint him -- kept him away from any taint
Emil Jones blocked the legislation, for over a year, and Obama had to be dragged into supporting it, only after it became a campaign issue.
Yeah. We find out now (only after the election, of course!) that Blagojevich has been known to be dirty for quite a while now (his own staffers have charged that he demanded money in exchange for political favors); we find out that Tony Rezko was a major Blagojevich bag man; we find out that Blagojevich’s wife made something like $700,000 in real estate dealings involving the state government; we find out that Blagojevich’s wife in fact arranged the sweetheart real estate deal Obama benefited from.
But this is what we voted for. We want Chicago EVERYWHERE.
