How so?
It is not so. Money kept by the states would be used much more efficiently because there would be no federal overhead. Every dollar sent to Washington has a 70 cent overhead associated with the cost of fed govt operation. Dura has it exactly backwards. He/it has obviously never played the grants game.
Many of the rich states are supporting poor states to an astounding degree. This is the “hidden” redistribution of wealth on a massive scale. States like NY get about 75 cents back for every dollar they send to DC. CT is even worse, getting back about 60 cents. Meanwhile, states like Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas get back well over a dollar in fed funds. They are simply unable to support themselves without massive cash infusions from Washington.
This system works fine during the good times, but now the rich states have taken a hit and that money won’t be flowing as readily.
