Five things that are creepy about (Obama's new) change.gov website

1. There is a website. Called Change.gov. I could stop right there. That’s creepy because a transition team’s website called, oh, for example “44thPresident.gov” is not sufficiently impressive. Here’s what’s really creepy about it, though. Don’t think of the word “change” there as a noun, or a verb, but as a command. Think of it as a command with the suffix .gov behind it. That gives me the willies right there.

2. It’s called Change.gov (part 2). Oh, and it’s a little juvenile to name an official United States government website after your campaign slogan (which was also Bill Clinton’s slogan, wasn’t it?). It has the feel of the kind of name a new student body president would give to her website — an American President, not so much. Could you imagine Abe Lincoln calling his website www.Honesty.gov? Not a grownup Abe Lincoln, is my guess.

3. OTRANS PRODUCTION SERVER. I tried to access the site when I first heard of it but apparently before it was ready for the public. It asked me for a username and password to get to the Otrans Production Server. The more I repeat those three words, the more I think of people-eating communist robots. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because it’s an anagram for “an undercover torpor sits”.

4. There is no such thing as the Office of the President-Elect, yet change.gov says it’s the website of that non-existant office. On November 7th, 2008, the office that Barack Obama holds is US Senator. Barack Obama’s public office will be US Senator until January 20, 2009. So, the title of the website being “Office of the President-Elect” is just a little weird.

5. Nearly everything Change.gov says. My wife tells me that reading the “service” section conjured images of the video for Pink Floyd’s Another Brick in the Wall Part 2. In the future, much electronic ink will be devoted to whether or not the words “universal” and “voluntary” should ever be next to each other, and so for now I will leave commentary bout Obama’s “America Serves” plans to others. One last thing about that section, though. There a quote at the top. Obama is now quoted without attribution to a particular speech or something similar, and doesn’t even say that the quote is from Obama. It’s just there, as if we are to imagine the words in red letter.

Some good photoshop work there...but what I’d like to see for “Darth Zero” is a Darth Vader helmet with cut-outs for his overly large ears...that would be a lasting symbol that would stick to him like tar.

”People get the kind of government they want...
...and deserve?”

The thing about that saying... half us DON’T want OR deserve Obama’s government. I sure as hell don’t.
