I had a mega virus because om local internet server was infected. Microsoft Support fixed the problem and I downloaded a file to "coorect"y local drive and delete the virus. It was a short time later that I saw some of the "older files" had been converted to word Pad document. If I open one of those files I use the "Open with Microsoft Word" and voila its okay. but when I save the file under a new name as a Word 97-2003 document and then look at it in explorer it's changed to a Wordpad document. Wassup?

Are you changing the extension (e.g. “wpd” or “.doc”) of the document name?

WordPad can read uncomplex Word documents. You most likely have doc or rtf extensions mapped to WordPad. This is easy to change.
From Explorer go to
Tools — >
Folder Options... -—>
File Types -—>
Scroll and select “DOC”
Click Change next to where it says WordPad
Hit OK.

If you only use Word to make the occasional letter or make simple spreadsheets with Excel, consider deinstalling it and using
OpenOffice instead. It's free. So is the Microsoft Word reader, even though it's harder to find the latest version of it. Despite the importance of Microsoft's product line, it seems like the functionality to cost ratio keeps dropping and the quality of free software keeps going up. I'm not even using Windows, Linux, or a Mac right now. I'm using FreeBSD. Harder to install, but I've never had any problems with security and viruses.

Is your computer on? Unplug it and go buy a Mac. It will make you happy and help the economy.

“but shell have a computer that works.”
At double the price or so of two PC’s. And Steve will never even thank her.
