Jefferson, Lincoln, and Lewis on the likes of Obama

His speeches are inspirational, he's given "hope" that he's going to bring about "change." He really wants to help everyone. Obama will preside over an administration that will make everything "fair." Hmmm, let's skip vacuous platitudes and get to some meaty postulates.

I found this quote by Thomas Jefferson:

"A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor and bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government. "

I think I had actually heard that one and this one from Abraham Lincoln on the radio the other day:

"Property is the fruit of labor...property is desirable...is a positive good in the world. That some should be rich shows that others may become rich, and hence is just encouragement to industry and enterprise. Let not him who is houseless pull down the house of another; but let him labor diligently and build one for himself, thus by example assuring that his own shall be safe from violence when built."

And not to put too fine a point on it, but someone over at the National Review found a great quote from the preeminently sagacious C.S. Lewis:

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."

'Nuff said.

Mr. J, and the other founders, (even Hamilton), would scoff at a man like Obama.

Thomas also said this

I sincerely believe that banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies, and that the principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but swindling futurity on a large scale.

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can
prevent the government from wasting the labors of the
people under the pretense of taking care of them.

Thomas Jefferson (1743 - 1826)

We must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt.

Thomas Jefferson (1743 - 1826),
letter to Samuel Kercheval, July 12, 1816

The democracy will cease to exist when you take away
from those who are willing to work and give to those
who would not.

Thomas Jefferson (1743 - 1826)

The Founding Fathers must be looking down with sadness and anger at the mess that has been made of the precious gift they entrusted to us.

C.S. Lewis:

Shoot. When I saw "Lewis", I was hoping for Jerry.

Hillary: "My opponent doesn't have the experience."
Obama: "Oh, La-dy!!"
