While most of us focus on national polls or battleground state polls, Karl Rove always raises one additional poll question. Is Barack Obama qualified to be president? On that question, Obama consistently does poorly, and he is not improving.
This week also brought a reminder that Sen. Obama hasn't closed the sale. The Washington Post/ABC poll found 45% of voters still don't think he's qualified to be president, about the same number who doubted his qualifications in March. This is seven points more than George W. Bush's highest reading in 2000 and the worst since Michael Dukakis's 56% unqualified rating in 1988.
How does a guy win the presidency when 45% of the country doesn't think he's qualified?
"Qualified" is a threshold issue, having nothing to do with policy questions. It is comprised of experience, judgment, and temperament, and 45% of the country thinks he's lacking in those areas.
The polls are tightening and the number of remaining undecideds at this stage of the game should concern Obama.

The people who decided the election will pull the lever for McCain
Obama scares them.
Well if 45% don’t think he is qualified, that means that 95% do think he is qualified!! (just using the Barack tax cut math)
How many of those 45% will show up to the polls. This is why the leftist media is throwing out bogus polls and trying to do whatever they can to dampen Republican support.
And in this same poll, he’s supposedly winning by 10 points.
I think his ‘not qualified’ ratings are actually probably about the same as Dukakis.
“Well if 45% dont think he is qualified, that means that 95% do think he is qualified!! (just using the Barack tax cut math)”
...LMAO!
Based on Obama’s close association with Ayers, a known domestic terrorist just as McVeigh and Nichols were/are, should disqualify him to serve in any government office capacity even at the local level. This piece of filthy trash would be screened from such endeavors had he not claimed racism at every turn as his crutch and excuse.
How many variation of percentages can they come up with, for heaven’s sake? The polls are starting to remind me of the stats given during a football game. “You know, Jim, with that play, he becomes only the 3rd linebacker from Nebraska to intercept the ball in Florida at the 40 yard line on a rainy Sunday while wearing a white jersey since 1991!”
Any objective observer would say that Mike Dukakis was “more qualified” way back when then B.O. is today. Goes to show how much the electorate is swayed by a slick campaigner.
Rove is right. There is a reason B. Hussein cannot close the deal.
To Barone’s “Jacksonians” you have to have done something to prove you can do the job.
They find Obama lacking. There is a reason he lost W. Va by 41 pts.
Unfortunately the 55% who do are more than enough to elect him.
Then why can't McCain?
Do you have to ask?
“Unfortunately the 55% who do are more than enough to elect him.”
Not really. The odds that all 55% of the people who think Obama’s qualified will vote Obama is very small. Heck, all it takes for most people to think someone is qualified to be president is to see that person’s picture on the news next to the word “President.”
“Then why can’t McCain?”
Some conservatives think he’s too liberal. Liberals think he is too conservative. Young people think his is too old. None of the above has to do with McCain’s ability to lead.
The perception on the financial crisis. McCain before that...was easily going to win.
