Weekend Box Office: Carol Disappoints But Christians Beat The Hater
Posted by Dirty Harry on Monday, October 6th, 2008
An American Carol pulled in a disappointing $3.8 million over the weekend on just over 1600 screens to come in at #7. However, on far fewer screens (500), Religulous pulled in nearly the same amount ($3.5 million).
I blame the election. No, really. The conservative base is pretty frustrated right now, teetering on demoralized, as McCain seemingly sinks lower and lower. Had An American Carol come out those few days right after the convention when we were flying high these box office numbers might have been higher.
The opposite is true for Religulous. Liberals are emboldened and soaring and up for a little Christian-bashing by way of their favorite not-very-smart hater.
This is why I think Oliver Stones W. has a chance to do some real business when it opens on the 17th. If you look at the advertising W. is essentially postured as a swift, mean kick in Bushs ass on his way out the door. If Obamas looking like a winner come the 17th W. might just be the kind of experience millions of liberals who thus far have avoided these leftist tropes in droves are looking for.
On the other hand
In just two weeks, the openly Christian Fireproof has already brought in a whopping $12.5 million on a budget of just a half-million dollars so suck on that Bill Maher Whose Intellectually Dishonest Movie Wont Clear Half That suck on that Bill Maher Who Got His Butt Handed To Him By That Kid On Growing Pains.

I was just thinking yesterday, some people are so blinded by hate of Christianity that they foolishly throw money into projects like this movie, and they ALWAYS fail. I wonder if they really think the American public will support them- how delusional.
For crying out loud! Why don't we all just get on our pitty-potties.
American Carol will do a lot better on DVD. Most conservatives won’t go near a movie theater for anything because the whole trip costs too much. I know I won’t. But I’ll catch this one in my home theater and I suspect lots of others will too.
Plus the old adage is true. Satire is what closes Saturday night.
I liked Carol. Would have been a lot better if they did without the swearing. But the jokes were spot on.
Personally I think it has been marketed poorly.
Their have been radio ads for a while on talk shows, but they really didn’t tell you jack about it.
Didn’t see a tv add until a few days ago.
I’ll definately be seeing it, but given I don’t go to the movies often and its poor performance this weekend, it may be out of theaters by the time I have a free weekend to see it.
The previews I saw for American Carol really didn’t make it look good. Sure it was skewering the left, but that’s not what I’m looking for in a movie. I want my comedies to actually be funny, and the previews did not make Carol look funny. Of course part of that is Zucker, he runs hot and cold. Sometimes (Airplane) his movies are brilliant, other times (Scary Movie 3) his movies are just terrible. I might stick it in my Netflix queue, but actually spending money on it needs to wait until I know which Zucker made it.
Agree. My wife & I saw it with only 4 other people in the theatre on Saturday. Sunday a friend of ours went - 2 other people were there too. Sad. I’m gonna buy the dvd to give away to friends. Bet it’ll be out for Christmas.
