No, John McCain didn’t graduate fifth from the bottom because of discipline issues. Notwithstanding his reputed IQ of 133, he didn’t apply himself academically, and had the grades to show for the lack of effort. Demerits didn’t affect class standing anywhere near what you are suggesting, any more than they affected my own class standing there.
I don’t think discipline demerits affect one’s scholastic standing.
