Nukes unlikely to be affected by Musharraf leaving By MATTHEW PENNINGTON, Associated Press Writer Tue Aug 19, 12:38 AM ET

Pervez Musharraf's departure from the presidency is unlikely to have a significant impact on how Pakistan's nuclear weapons are controlled.

Experts say a 10-member committee, and not just the president, makes decisions on how to use them and only a complete meltdown in governance — still a distant prospect in Pakistan — could put the atomic bomb in the hands of extremists.

"Pakistan's nuclear assets are not one man's property," said Maria Sultan, a defense analyst and director at the London-based South Asian Strategic Stability Institute.

"Any (political) transition in Pakistan will have no effect on Pakistan's nuclear assets because it has a very strong custodial control."

I am shocked over this article. After reading it I was surprised that it was completely ingeniousness and untrue. One of the most important things everyone needs to understand is how far the radical fundamentalists have penetrated both the armed services (officers) and the secret service of Pakistan. Both of these organs have been unable to stop the infiltration of their organizations and the nuclear weapons are NOT as secure as this so-called author indicates. Apparently it is more important to get Obama elected than to tell the truth about nuclear weapons since McCain can handle the situation (looking at his 20+ years of foreign affairs service) but Obama surely cannot. Musharraf leaving is a VERY serious destabilizing situation and we can watch India's response to the situation to really gauge what is going on in Southwest Asia.

Pakistan’s nukes or most of its strategic policies were never decided by any one person, but rather the army top brass. Do you seriously think Musharraf survived all these years on his own??? It’s not for any reason the US was not against his departure. The army has always held the keys and will continue-its bigger than Musharraf or any of the country’s previous dictators.
