Back in 1960 Lyndon Johnson was the presidential front-runner candidate. At the convention (then) Senator John Kennedy unseated Johnson and became the candidate for president; Johnson was named his VP at the convention.

No he wasn't. Kennedy had won most of the primaries prior to the convention and came in with enough committed delegates to win nomination on the first ballot.
