WaPo:
Why not have a vote on offshore drilling? There's a serious debate to be had over whether Congress should lift the ban on drilling in the Outer Continental Shelf that has been in place since 1981. Unfortunately, you won't be hearing it in the House of Representatives -- certainly, you won't find lawmakers voting on it -- anytime soon.Instead of dealing with the issue on the merits, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), a staunch opponent of offshore drilling, has simply decreed that she will not allow a drilling vote to take place on the House floor. Why not?

My guess Ms. Pelosi (who thinks she is Queen of the USA) has family or is personally making some big bucks out of the high prices we are paying for her mandates.
How does her decision hold so much power with Congress when even the most liberal voters are screaming for relief?
We cannot let them go on break (ha) without getting some of her rules rescinded.
Because plastic surgery has limited her ability to think!
This obstructionist bee - otch needs to be thrown out of office. Being from San Francisco that won't happen, but surely her time as SOTH is just about up.
She is a gift to the GOP. If she keeps it up, it will be the single reason the Republicans win anything this year.
What part of DRILL did they not understand? Let’s drill them into oblivion.
They are Keynesians. Keyne's stuck his nose under the tent under FDR and allowed Government to play a role and be king maker rather than let the supply and demand curve basic Econ 101 work.
Which San-Fran-Nan probably flunked in college....
But I digress.... You see if they let Bush Drill and let Supply and Demand work, we won't need her highness and the Union guys (told to vote for her) that build the pipelines and eventually nuke plants will get real pissed. Because of all the overtime they will work, they will start getting pissed at the higher tax rates and become Republicans (ask anyone in Michigan, it happened a lot to the line guys, working tons of overtime, they finally got it, but they kept quiet about it).
If prices come down and he gets credit for it, they can't have that. They will do anything to prevent the Bush Administration from having a victory, it is about destroying him and his legacy. Not to mention not letting Laffer and Adam Smith Economics work, they can't ahve that.
In the mean time what they are doing to the long term financial and energy independence health of the nation borders on criminal.
Queen Bee Nanacy is suppressing the vote for campaign reasons.
To agree to a vote now, is to probably lose party discipline, and worse, acquiese to Bush’s initiative in ending the Presidential order banning the drilling.
Also, it gives ammunition to every Republican opponent of sitting Democraat Congresscritters that OPPOSE lifting the ban. Most of the other Democrats incumbents that support lifting the ban may be almost assured of sailing to re-election, because they would be seen as “doing something”.
It is not wise to fall to the ground in a fit of defiance as that bus comes looming up.
Thank you - of course - the election - and I thought it was all about money!
It’s about power and politics isn’t it!
So Pelosi has a double ended whip regardless of the hardship she has caused many innocent people in our nation!
If even the MSM is turning on san fran nan that is a good thing
I have been talking to several of my relatives from the mid-west, Michigan, Kentucky, and Iowa — if the election were held tomorrow — McCain wins overwhelmingly based on $4.00 a gallon for gas - one of my cousins works in a plant with almost 1,000 employees, two months ago the plant was 60/40 in favor of Obambi — today, 70/30 in favor of McCain.
They hear President Bush say drill - that is what they hear and they immediately felt a little relief at the pump - a drop of .10 cents a gallon (that is their reality — they drive 4 wheel drive trucks, because it snows like hell there in the winter, and there are no snow days — a hybrid won’t cut it and it darn sure won’t get them to work - no work, no money, no eat).
They want another dollar drop...they want to drill.
The Dems are going to get bludgeoned over the head on this issue with blue collar (upper middle class) workers...
RUKDGME,
I concur for different reasons. I have been speaking with a white collar friend with blue collar PA roots. We agree, we can't see the Harley Riding, Beer drinking Union guy pulling the lever for this college guy who if you look at his resume on Wiki has never really worked for a living, heck I do not think he has ever flipped a burger during his high school years.
IMHO folks in MI, OH, and PA will pull the lever for McCain by default.
One more thing. The Detroit's Mayor Kilpatrick is in hot water again. He shoved some Sheriff's and his mess is getting worse. The unfortunate linkage between the mayor and Obama is occurring and is being talked about on 1200 am in Detroit ( African American Talk and Gospel) this morning. If the Mayor is not gone by November, and his issues continue, he could have a dramatic effect on the Michigan vote.
I think the Democrats’ strategery for the next few years centers around global warming. They intend to hook on to this nonsense. That’s why they oppose fossil fuels. Drilling goes against the global warming mantra.
Why global warming? The Democrats are in thrall to the environmentalists. Secondly, people stand to make lots of money finding the “remedy” to global warming.
Can someone please help me with this?
Is there any other country in the world that refuses to develop and utilize their own natural resources like the USA? I cant think of any.
“IMHO folks in MI, OH, and PA will pull the lever for McCain by default.”
Yeah, I would tend to agree with you. Now, he seems to be barking up the right tree...and the Dems keep giving Republican’s much work with. Not drilling on principle does not effect the price of hamburger...families can’t eat principle.
And thank God Kilpatrik is still up to his bafoonery — hum, how many eletoral votes from Michigan (hasn’t been a Red State in how many years). Nice, Very Nice!
The moratorium must be renewed each year to stay in effect so it will go away in September unless they vote to extend it. That’s why President Bush’s move was so brilliant: It forces the Dems hand and makes them go on record against drilling 2 months before the election.
“House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), a staunch opponent of offshore drilling, has simply decreed that she will not allow a drilling vote to take place on the House floor. Why not?”
Because she’d lose the vote as the Blue Dog Democrats would desert her leadership and the drilling ban repealed.
Nancy, the worse speaker in history, still thinks if she makes it to November, she’ll retain her majority and diva-ship, oops I mean speakership.
Like Pelosi's husband, who is a real estate biggie in San Francisco, and who might directly benefit from people moving back into the city to escape having to pay high gas prices in their suburban commutes?
I would suggest any future Speakers regardless of their political affiliation - be part of the working class of the USA who understand the ramifications of politically-oriented moves in the House which affect the majority of the working public!!
Pelosi’s selfish panacea to the environmentalists has been one of the most selfish, crude and ignorant bits of dictatorship I have seen put forth in years.
And worse: she continues to stumble “blondly” forward with her decision notwithstanding the obvious blunder it has been.
