Birth certificates are easily obtainable at ever registrar of vital statistics office in just about every county courthouse in the nation. If anyone wants a certified copy of the Nobama certificate, all you have to do is ask the clerk in the county courthouse where he says he was born. Pay the clerks fee and be on your way.

That was once true, but in these days of identity theft, it no longer is. See this page for the restrictions on who may request certified copies of certificates of live birth in Hawaii.

On a whim, I tried to search for Obama's mother on the on-line Social Security Death Index, but I can't find anything under any combination of names. Maybe I'm searching wrong? Is there any reason why she wouldn't be listed, having died in 1995?

You have to be a cousin. It's not all clear how many degrees of consanguinity apply. Since his mother's family seem to be pretty much Scanderhoovian/UKish, and they have a rather thinly branched family tree, it's probably pretty easy for white people to get a copy under HI law.

Black folk might have a problem though.
