There weren’t too many Americans studying Russian around 1960 unless they were communists or fellow travelers...... then there was Lee Harvey Oswald, who proved to be a commie assassin.
Russian was a hot study in 1960 and after. I had friends studying it in the early sixties. It was right after sputnik and was a pretty novel and new major in college. Studying Russian doesn’t make a communist in my experience.
