The conference was nothing like what Obama had envisoned, but it was exactly the way Wright, a former adviser to Chicago’s only black mayor, Harold Washington, recalled it.
I hate to nit pick, but Harold Washington was not Chicago’s only black mayor. After Harold Washington died in office, Eugene Sawyer, who was black, was appointed to serve out the remainder of Washington’s term until the next election. At that next election in 1989, Richard M. Daley, the famous Mayor “Boss” Daley’s son, was first elected mayor of Chicago. He has been Chicago’s mayor ever since.
