Senator John McCain invites potential running mates to his ranch. Who do you like?

Posted on 05/25/2008 2:02:16 PM PDT by Sun

I heard on tv that Gov. Bobby Jindal, Mitt Romney, Gov. Charlie Crist, Rob Portman, Senator Sam Brownback, Senator Joe Lieberman were invited to Senator McCain's ranch, and some (or all) are potential running mates.

So I'm doing some research on them, and would like to hear what other FReepers think about these people.

Of course, it's not a "done deal" that any of these will be the running mate, and it could be someone entirely different. I also like Sen. John Thune, Governor Palin, J.C. Watts, Michael Steele and a few others.

“Last night on the news they said Gov. Bobby Jindal, Mitt Romney, and Gov. Charlie Crist..”

I originally heard that, too, but then on PBS, I heard that Brownback, Lieberman and Portman were also invited. Maybe they are just going for the food. :)

Duncan Hunter’s Marine son is running for his seat, so Hunter won’t be in Congress next year, anyway.

Palin and Jindal and too new to the gubernatorial level.

Sanford would be the home-run choice. Strong agreement on pork-barrel politics, on which McCain can genuinely, enthusiastically run; fundamental disagreement on immigration, which is exactly what the base would like to see addressed. The guy will have had 6 successful years as governor, also was in congress with a 92% conservative rating, and is still a rising star in his 50s.

Unfortunately he didn’t come out for McCain before this year’s primary (although he’d backed him in 2000), and we know how McCain carries grudges. Still, I think he is so strongly the right choice that some powers that be within the party should give some strong nudging—and financial support promises—if McCain will look to Sanford.

“I heard Jindal talking on Beck on TV about how wrong it was for guns to be seized after Katrina. He was excellent and very strong on the 2nd Amendment rights of individuals to protect themselves....especially when they need to most!! “

I like that!!

We can tell John McCain who we want him to pick by contacting him:

John McCain 703-418-2008 and e-mail jpblack@mccain08hq.com and http://www.johnmccain.com/Contact/

AND calling the talk shows, because McCain’s people will be listening.

I LIKE Gov. Bobby Jindal - he's very pro-life and received a 100% rating from the ACU when he was a congressman:

There's stuff in the back of my freezer that's older than he is.

You’re right, with McCain as opposed to Powell, we have a reasonable expectation that he’ll vote Republican in November.

Steve King

King would be REALLY REALLY fine as Veep. But it would be too good to be true. Not with McCain...

Any reason John Bolton couldn’t be considered?

You put someone on the ticket because he can bring a political constituency with him. Bolton is not a pol.

My guess it’ll be a Fred alright, just not the one that you want. Fred Smith CEO Fed Ex. The word has been out for several months, and Smith gave “Ace” his endorsement almost from his entering the race.

Surprise! Something no one has picked up on, Fred Smith was also invited this weekend, and the last that I heard had accepted.

I’d be satisfied if a year from now Hunter was either VP, Sec of Defense or head of Homeland Security.

If you think he is good you don't want to waste him on DHS. The Department should go the way of Education and Energy, except that Education and Energy won't even go the way they need to go.

DHS is a pork-barreling bureaucracy, with a foot in every district in the country, like the Corps of Engineers. They don't actually do anything. Even Bush couldn't get anyone real to run it after Ridge.

Terrorists are founght by DoD, CIA, NSA and FBI. The Coast Guard is a good outfit, but the rest is bureaucratic mush.

The Governor has her hands full taking care of five children, of which one is a new born with special needs.

“The Governor has her hands full taking care of five children, of which one is a new born with special needs.”

I’m sure she can afford all the help she needs.

It’s not a matter of help! She’s his mother, and has no business taking on a job like VPUS.

McCain will not:

1. Pick a conservative VP.
2. Pick conservative judges.
3. Enforce our borders.
4. Lower taxes.
5. Govern as a conservative.

The country is screwed, may as well let democrats take the blame.

Screw McCain as he has screwed us.

So we should dead-screw America with Obama? Not with me.
