In 1997, during the 105th congress, it was former Senate Majority Leader, Trent Lott (R-MS) and former Congressman J.C. Watts (R-OK) that sponsored and passed legislation with both houses in congress unanimously recognizing Juneteenth Independence Day in America. Similar legislation continues to be unanimously passed every year in congress.
Juneteenth is America's 2nd Independence Day celebration. 29 states recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday or state holiday observance, as well as the congress of the United States.
Together we will see Juneteenth become a national holiday in America!
