Well, let's face it, any band naming itself the "Decemberists" knows perfectly well what it's about. I'd guess maybe 5% of Obama's crowd would recognize the reference, and 5% of those, the song.

It's mostly tribal nonsense, the same way a college student will wear a Che t-shirt knowing only that it's a vague expression of rebellion guaranteed to irritate his class enemies.
