I am sure that you are at peace now that polar bears are a protected species. Maybe I am just a bit cynical, but I believe that as long as the seals are plentiful so will be the polar bears. I suppose I am not as brilliant as are Washington politicians. Their foresight is often breathtaking. Besides, should not the Darwin worshipers be talking to us about natural selection and the survival of the fittest? The polar bears are doing well, it seems, as their population has quadrupled over the years. If humans were doing as well, there would be no room left for us.

Our beloved politicians, a collection of sprayed on hair dos, flowery speeches and empty suits, keep telling us that they are going to make America great once again. When I observe that aristocratic assortment of men and women promising to make my country great again, I want to look them in their collective eye and ask; when exactly did America cease being great? Insisting that America has lost her greatness shows disdain, not love for our country.

How is a country’s greatness measured? Would it be as the most generous nation on the planet? Is it the world’s industrial, agricultural and technological leader? Or is it a country where the standard of living for the poor is wealthy in comparison to others? Is it a country that has a peaceful transfer of power every election? Is it a country where a person is free to speak his or her mind, practice any religion or not and move unrestricted about the country? Is it a country with the world’s greatest all volunteer Armed Forces? …

I do not care who the politician is. When they pronounce across the globe that America is no longer great, the rest of the world will listen and agree. Those who wish our destruction will be encouraged to work harder at it while former friends will fade away.

Maybe America’s greatness was tarnished a bit when we systematically removed God from public view or when we decided that killing unborn babies was freedom of choice. Maybe some of it was lost when a hyphenated identity came to mean more to many of us than did our American identity. Maybe a little more of our greatness wore off when some members of our aristocratic class sided with the North Vietnamese communists while Americans were dying in jungle combat or being tortured as prisoners of war. Some more of it slipped away when our politicians ultimately abandoned our South Vietnamese friends leading to their defeat, our humiliating evacuation of the United States Embassy in Saigon and the deaths of more than a million people afterwards. Some more shine rubbed off when following the first Arab oil embargo, our politicians did nothing. It was tarnished again when we did not take on the Iranian Mullahs after they invaded our embassy and held our people hostage and once more when we did not go after them when their terrorist proxy bombed the Marine barracks in Beirut. More of America’s greatness was lost in succession of the first World Trade Center bombing, our embassy bombings, and the USS Cole bombing when we repeatedly let the terror masters off the hook. More of it was lost when the political class voted to send men and women to war and promptly began to disparage them with names they were too cowardly to use to describe our nation’s enemies. We truly slammed the door on greatness when following more than a quarter of a century of doing nothing to address our greatest national security issue; our President was forced to prostrate himself before the House of Saud to beg for a few more barrels of oil. Our President reduced to begging, for a natural resource that is plentiful in our own country, from a country that has contributed nothing to the world except oil and terrorism while basking in a global transfer of wealth to them.

Not to worry, however. Once our greatness is restored, the politicians promise to put forth the same great effort to save America’s middle-class. All we need to do is just give them the chance. Imagine a nest filled with baby birds. All of them looking skyward with their mouths open and squealing for a piece of whatever it is mamma bird is dangling before them – like socialized healthcare. All America’s middle-class needs is protection from America’s political-class. I propose a warning to accompany all political ads. “Caution, history has shown that political promises and the pandering nitwits who deliver them may be hazardous to your existence.”

Our greatness slips away some each time a politician places self and political party ahead of the needs of the people. We can return to greatness alright. Just as soon as the collection of boobs in Washington realizes that by their actions, past and present, the only true endangered species on this planet are the people who are the American Nation.

Absolutely wonderful article. Thanks for posting it. I think I'll send a copy to my senators and rep.
