The stuff is in this article is true, but I think you’re confusing typical Middle Eastern dishonesty (yes, Middle Eastern, not just Arab) with the religious concept of taqiyyah. All Muslims are or should be familiar with the concept, but it’s practiced & developed primarily by Shi’a & sects like ‘Alawites & Druze, since they are the ones who have the need to hide themselves. The word itself is derived from a root that has “fear” as one of its meanings, so you can see that its related to concealment out of fear.
Now, outside of the Shi’a & various sects, this kind of taqiyyah is not something commonly practiced in daily life in the Muslim world. So guess what their primary interpretation of it is? To outwardly fit in to Western society while inwardly loathing it. I’m sure you’re not surprised.
