HFM exists in the USA, too, but is rarely reported, it’s not considered “serious”, and CDC calls it “common”:

The strains in the USA don’t seem to cause problems. CDC cites past deadly outbreaks in Malaysia and Taiwan.
My daughter had it a couple years back. It is pretty common.
Which is my point, things we have dealt with easily has killed 22 kids..
You are correct, wealth lessens the impact of many things nature throws at us.
It may be a different strain than what we have here, but in general, being able to afford a certain amount of infrastructure and being able to have people with the time to solve problems makes us able to handle problems easier.
