The probable answer is that a substantial segment of the electorate is shifting from conservative values to moderate values.

Yeah...I don't buy it! Repeat a lie often enough and loud enough and a "substantial segment" of the electorate will believe it as truth!

There were folks that never heard of Hunter, who jumped on board the moment they checked him out. Of course with the RNC/DNC/Enemedia black out, it took too long for folks to hear about him.

History has shown that the VP nominee (unless the subject of a major scandal) has very little effect on the election.

This Rothenberg is having a Liebergasm. Unless Lieberman - at a minimum - officially declares himself to be a Rebublican, this suggestion is a no-go from the get-go.

McCain’s major problem is to get the conservative GOP base not to sit out the election. (He will attract a good number of alienated Democrats dissatisfied with their candidate, no matter who his running mate is.) Accordingly, he has to choose a running mate somewhat to his right ideologically. Mitt Romney will provide that, and his youthful appearance will mitigate McCain’s age problem.

Leaving aside all other considerations, under this scenario we could have TWO old guys on the ticket.

Neither McCain nor Lieberman has executive experience. Instead of another middle-aged to elder senator, McCain needs a younger governor with conservative bona fides. Liebrman is liberal on everything but the WOT; only slightly more liberal than McCain.

I’d bet my life that Rothenberg is a Dummycrat (judging from his bio), and so his suggestion of Lieberman as running mate is not meant as a friendly one to McCain, if you get my drift.

Mitt Romney is the man. Please see my post # 42.

I am not asking you to "buy it."

This country is far different than the one that existed 50 years ago when I first voted.

Honestly, the visual contrast would not be good. I know how shallow that sounds, but when Romney endorsed McCain they were in front of a stage-sized US flag and Romney was two stripes taller than McCain .. did not enhance the candidate.

Ann Coulter makes a convincing argument:

If Hillary is elected president, we'll have a four-year disaster, with Republicans ferociously opposing her, followed by Republicans zooming back into power, as we did in 1980 and 1994, and 2000. (I also predict more Oval Office incidents with female interns.)

If McCain is elected president, we'll have a four-year disaster, with the Republicans in Congress co-opted by "our" president, followed by 30 years of Democratic rule.

First you’re going to have to convince conservatives (on this board, for starts) that Romney IS a conservative. Of course there are those on this board for whom Reagan wouldn’t be conservative enough. Unfortunately, Republican governors of MA don’t fare well with the rest of the party beyond the Bay State.

And, I really believe the side-by-side visual is not good for McCain as the presidential candidate. Romney makes McCain look much older, less healthy/virorous, and shorter.

I do see Romney getting a top cabinet position if McCain were to win. I’d certainly like to see his business expertise brought to bear in the financial/economic areas. That could help him to establish those conservative credentials the ‘base’ would expect.

There is, however, somebody who would fill that bill and therefore be a near-perfect pick for McCain: Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman.

Brave! There was a point when I was for this. I have been moving away from this lately and leaning towards Romney. (I know that's "brave" of me as well!)

I like Joe but it's hard to beat a smart, wealth, articulate executive with private sector experience who has ties to several states.

I think that a good choice would be Congressman Eric Cantor. He has a lot of the same appeal that Lieberman has, but none of his baggage. Also, he is from a swing state that is trending DemocRAT.

No congressmen, FRiend. We need an executive. One who is younger, more conservative, has swing state pull, and is a good debater. The fact that Romney is all those things, is wealthy, and has appeal is multiple states has not escaped my notice.

I think McCain needs to pick a governor or someone from outside Washington.

I think it'll be Pawlenty. I hope it's Sanford. Sarah Palin might be a darkhorse.

I’m glad to see there’s at least one Conservative on this board. I thought this was a Conservative Forum, but the more I read the more I cant believe. Putting aside the fact the Joe Lieberman is almost as Liberal as John Kerry, look how weak he looked in the VP debate against Cheney. He got is a** kicked.

I live in Rhode Island (which is a breeding ground for liberal wack jobs) and follow Massachusetts politics very closely. Romney is a Joke. He brought Socialized medicine to Massachusetts. He’s flip flopped on every issue, in fact I dont know where he stands on anything one day to the next. I cannot believe people are promoting Lieberman and Romney as possible VP candidates. Why not promote Guiliani next. Might as well throw him in the mix.

Rob Portman from Ohio would be the best pick. He’s a popular Conservative who a lot of people have respect for from a state that the GOP needs. Haley Barbour from Mississippi is a good pick, Tim Pawlenty from MN, and Governor Sanford from SC.

Your right on!! Just because Lieberman supports the war on terrorism doesn’t mean hes an all out Conservative. He is very liberal from being a baby killer to being an environmental whacko to being a tax and spend liberal, but then again I think this is where the GOP wants to take the party.

Cantor wants to be the first Jewish Speaker, I can’t see him going for VP at this point.

*omney is no executive. Slapping a suit on a pathological liar, liberal scumbag and electing him Governor doesn’t make one an executive. Slick Willard = Slick Willie.

Obama may choose Bloomberg amd now speculation that McCain could choose Lieberman. Does anyone running have allegience to their own party?
