You know, I’ve been wondering for years where military docs were trained. I had assumed each service branch had its own teaching hospitals. Or that doctors joined after they had earned their MD’s through the usual route.
Sounds fascinating, I’m guessing there’s a good deal less B.S. endured in internship and residency.
OK, you know what it means but you may have to explain it to her. Be nice, though. I've learned to be very respectful to people whose business is taking sharp objects to the human body... ;-)

The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), was established in 1972 by F. Edward Hebert, a Louisiana Congressman, and graduated its first class in 1980. The university is a center for military medical education and research. The primary mission of the school is to prepare graduates for service to the country at home and abroad in the medical corps. USUHS has officially changed its acronym to USU (Uniformed Services University). Both the Medical School and Graduate School of Nursing are located on the USU Campus, along with several research departments.
Students attending USU can focus on their education without the worry of incurring debt. Medical students enter the university as commissioned officers in the grade of O-1 in one of the four uniformed services: Army, Navy, Air Force or Public Health Service. No prior service is required for admission to USU. Students with prior active duty service as officers must forfeit all of their earned rank and start over as O-1s. Students pay no tuition or fees and, in fact, receive the full salary and benefits of a uniformed officer in the pay grade of O-1 throughout their four years at the university in exchange for a seven-year active duty service commitment following their Internship and Residency service after graduation. In addition, due to new legislation as of Federal Fiscal Year 2008, students who were officers in a pay grade higher than 0-1 when they entered the Medical School, even though reduced in rank to 0-1, will continue to be paid their former higher base pay while students. Students in the Graduate Programs are a mix of both civilians and uniformed officers. They also pay no tuition or fees. Civilian students may receive stipends and uniformed graduate students continue to receive their active duty pay and benefits while attending school at USU. The Graduate School of Nursing students are all active duty uniformed nurses or nurses in federal civilian service. Neither pay tuition or fees at USU, and unlike the medical students, both graduate students and nursing students maintain their rank and continue to receive their regular salaries while students at the university.
The university currently has two mottos: “Learning to Care For Those In Harm’s Way” and “Providing Good Medicine In Bad Places.”
Congratulations indeed. Your daughter is obviously very well prepared with enormous potential to succeed. She wears the uniform now for at least 10 years. It’s a long obligation for grads but for a chance at the best medical training in the world it’s well worth it.
