It is NOT free market capitalism. The government has near slaves to offer the lowest cost. No business can operate or even make an important decision without the permission and guidance of local thugs. Free market my kiester.

A nation that makes nothing is nothing.

We make all kinds of things. If you see an opportunity in a low margin industry like textiles and you would like to add to the stuff we make, then open a textile factory, go hire some of your countrymen and get to work producing.

Well, I worked for a large apparel manufacturer for a good while. I will admit that it's been a bit since I've been there - less than 5 years, though.

If you wear lower-end jeans (sold at WalMart, Target, etc), there's an excellent chance that they were made south of the border (Mexico, Honduras). All of the upper-end clothing that I ever saw come through - expensive jeans, "brand-name" apparel - was made in Vietnam.

I never saw anything that was made in China. But - this was a few years ago.....

A personal story-—
My sister in law was sewing bathing suits in a small factory when it closed and went overseas.

She was mad... so mad she went back to school and got a BS degree in business management.

Now she is a mid level manager in a good company. She said “If they had not closed, I would still be sitting at a sewing machine”.

If that’s just numbers to you, do this experiment: Check the perimeter to see if your boss is out of the way, duck in your cubicle and start checking your tags.

OK, lets see:

Leather bomber jacket -- Pakistan
Oxford shirt -- Mexico
Slacks -- Costa Rica
Socks -- no label
Shoes -- China

"A nation that makes nothing is nothing."

I was let go (as well as others) back in March. I was interviewed at a company who manufactures fuelcells. Things are going well for them and although 48 people applied for the position I am hopeful.

The low tech manufacturing jobs have/will be leaving, I surmise the one's left in manufacturing will be educated, experienced and in fields which outsourcing will not be an option.
