BEIJING (AFP) - China turned its back Saturday on appeals for dialogue with the Dalai Lama, vowing to smash anti-China forces in Tibet, where it said the death toll from recent unrest had risen to 19.
A day after Beijing launched a manhunt for monks and others it blamed for violence in Tibet, an editorial in the People's Daily, mouthpiece of the Chinese Communist party, said opposition to Chinese rule in the Himalayan region must be wiped out.

Seems to me that this is exactly why China bid for the Olympic Games in the first place. Once you get the international community “invested” all manner of things become possible. Yes, the US boycotted the Moscow Games over Afghanistan, but that was Jimmy Carter. Does anybody think GWB will do the same over Tibet?
Europe is backing away from Tibet, too. Taiwan had better go on alert, the Communists are coming...
The American Republican Party.
Party of Abraham Lincoln. Party of Ronald Reagan. Party which challenged Mr. Gorbachev to “tear down that wall!”.
Arguably among the most powerful political organizations in the history of Earth - ever to have rallied consistently on the side of what is free, and what is right.
That Republican Party.
Has it sadly seems, been *bought*. Purchased, lock stock and barrel, by communists.
It’s really shocking, and more sad than words can express. “Free trade” has compromised the once-principled GOP.
Now it stands, it would seem, for nothing.
Not for America.
Not for right.
Just for selling stuff. Which isn’t even made here anymore.
Most of the Western Hemisphere is being taken over by the Chicoms..
ETHNIC CLEANSING IN TIBET.
This poster would like to see all the motivated, angry, impassioned principled conservatives who rant and carry on about John McCain - direct just 1% of that righteous indignation, at the party having sold out to “free trade” sleazeballs who have so neutered America we now stand mute.
I am so frustrated at the GOP right now.
More even, than I was when Bush was trying to push Amnesty.
This is pathetic.
Amnesty isnt dead yet, and the Chicoms are just getting warmed up..
shameful.
Asia is a big Continent, and even though Clancy’s novel may have dispelled some myths, there is no doubt in my mind that the Chinese are waking up. The Siberian area of Russia is so rich in raw and natural resources, there is no way an expansionist, agressive China, is NOT eying it covetously...(is that a word?)
No.
W has made it increasingly diffcult for me to support him. I just hope there isnt a White House Chinese Dinner planned like the Eid dinner they had in 2001..
Gee, that's a real shock isn't it? What would anyone expect from a totalitarian regime that uses news blackouts and regularly shoots down its own citizens for merely dissenting?
Taiwan elected the pro-ChiCom candidate just today. Apparently they want a little taste of ChiCom rule Tibetan style.
I have been looking for information on that candidate, why would a Taiwanese be pro-chicom?? Taiwan has been in perpetual alert for years, why would they vote in a puppet??
I don’t know a lot about Taiwanese politics. I think it’s a complicated and nuanced thing. He isn’t directly calling for reunification but he has said he will sign a peace agreement IF China stops aiming missiles at them and he said something about it depending on how Tibet is handled. I think economic issues dominated their election and a lot of people don’t vote because they don’t get democracy. Funny, same could be said here. But he is replacing a very vocal pro-independence leader so they have made a statement about it whether they wanted to or not. Like the GOP it’s money over liberty. People the world over are going to rue the day they chose prosperity over freedom.
