They may have brought some work back, but you are mistaken in large part. The 777 and 747 heavy checks are done overseas, most of the narrow body domestic work is contracted out to stateside vendors.

I flew on a repo into SFO last year that was going in to a heavy check. I could have sworn HEAVY MX was UAL only. My boss told me yesterday that that wasnt true. I stand corrected. The only MX we contract out are mods and paint usually. I pround to announce that all of our paint shop work is done in Mena, Arkansas!
