Snopes often (if not always, I don't know) supplies the reasoning for the determination.

In this case the entry identifies the Congressional report from which this list came, and notes that the quoted stats are of active military deaths -- all causes, not combat/operational (excluding suicides, illness, etc.). In the context in which these stats were presented, the wrong data was used.

It's easy to be taken, as I was by this same message.

It’s OK, sion. Folks have a right to check with Snopes if they want. I won’t stop them.

The figures had to be gotten from somewhere, so I guess if it makes folks feel good to go to Snopes and read just enough to make themselves sound superior, that’s fine, to.

At least you actually READ it.

And with that, I’m outta here for the night. I think I’ve overstayed my welcome. And besides...the nausea just doesn’t want to go away.
