The hope that Obama speaks of is in actuality the courage to hope in the face of fearfulness. The change Obama speaks of is really about the courage to stand for change against powerful forces in our government. He has used hope and change to highlight his courageousness in a time of great turbulence. He has essentially become a hero to people sullen in fear. When he speaks of hope and change he is really telling people to dare to be courageous in a time when courage is hard to muster. This is why he is doing so well. Simply put, hope and change alone are useless, but the courage to hope and change is priceless in this election.
When he speaks of his stance against the war in Iraq what he is really saying is that he showed that he has the courage to make the hard decisions that are not popular. When he speaks of change he is saying that he has the courage to stand against the most powerful forces in our nation in order to change Washington so that it works for all Americans. He says that he has the courage to find common ground with enemies like Iran and Cuba. He claims he is the only candidate with the courage to take a new political path that rises above the pettiness that has held America's potential down for so long.
Is it no surprise that Hillary is having a hard time dealing with Obama? The more she attacks him on the issues the more petty and useless she seems, because she hasn't found a way to rip people away from the message of courageousness in the face of fear that Obama is peddling. Obama's speeches exemplify this as they are all about taking a crowd of fear stricken people and in a matter of minutes filling them up with the courage to hope and change. The linchpin to his campaign is courage, as hope and change are simply the conduits he uses to create a heroic image. Hillary has figured this out, though, and a sign of that is the phone ringing at 3 a.m. campaign ad. She struck at Obama's core of support with that ad and a sign of that is how quickly he responded with a spinoff ad on the same subject. It's clear that her strategy going forward is to attack Obama in a way that makes voters doubt that he is really all that courageous.
Needless to say, John McCain is tailored made to defeat Obama's campaign. McCain's proven courageousness makes Obama wither in comparison. In fact, McCain's campaign was successful because he ran based on the same message as Obama. McCain touts his proven courage as a former P.O.W.. He has repeated the fact that he had the courage to support the surge in Iraq when everyone else was opposed. He says he has proven that he has the courage to take on special interests and wasteful spending in Washington. McCain ran on a record of courage, and that's why he won the Republican primary, and will win the Presidency.
McCain and Obama's success prove that this year's election is all about fear.
As for Fred Thompson he did not win because except for one debate in SC he literally had no pulse. Plus you can't have your wife run your campaign.
“But if anyone else does that then they’re using FEAR”
Exactly!!!
Obama casts his opponents as part of the problem not the solution: he tries to say that everyone else is trying to use fear while he is trying to build courage.
LOL U have to admit its working like a charm.
Hypocrats are a real piece of work...there was a great cartoon about hypocrats screaming about fear-mongering from Bush/Cheney/Rove/Rummy/etc.
Meanwhile all the subjects from the sky is falling with the economy/dollar/mortgages/DOW, not to mention all the rights we’ve lost with FISA/Dept. of Homeland security/Patriot Act, are in the background.
If ANYONE has been guilty of fear-mongering it’s the hypocrats.
They actually argue that Bush is so incompetent that Iran will get nukes, while they’re undermining every move he makes to make that very scenario happen all the quicker!
When it comes to hypocrats, you can bank on them putting the country dead last, and their own power first!
“He has essentially become a hero to people sullen in fear.”
Can someone please give me a short dissertation on what these people fear and why. I too have my fears regarding the direction this country is taking, but Hussein Bin Obama is definitely the last person who can allay them.
In fact, he and his fellow members of the ROP are some of the reasons for my fears.
“Can someone please give me a short dissertation on what these people fear and why”
I think they fear living without a government or leader controlling their lives for them.
Where conservatives fear the exact opposite.
You are right. McCain won over the people who were afraid of conservatives and Huckabee won over the people who were afraid of Mormons . . . and he still finished 1.4 million votes behind Mitt Romney.
Fear is a normal and useful human emotion—unless excessive or carried to the point of irrationality. It is a lot more useful than a yearning for utopia.
“Fear is a normal and useful human emotion”
Yes it is. Without fear we’d all be dead. And we have good reasons to be fearful in this nation right now............... but it’s your reaction to that fear that counts.
I do want to point out that McCain is using the fear of having a Lib in office as a way to get support from conservatives......... it isnt working so well with us though.
Damn...I thought you said beer.
>> Obama’s success prove that this year’s election is all about fear.
Well, it’s certainly true in my case. I have been motivated by fear.
For example, I just voted for Obama in the TX primary AND caucus, because I’m afraid the thought of Bill Clinton running around the white house in his boxer shorts chasing an intern would give me a coronary.
And now that the primary is over, I’m afraid it’s time for Obama to get his sorry communist butt kicked!
LOL!!!
Apparently you haven't seen the myriad of DU'ers-in-training here, the clothespin wearing cretins who tell you that standing on principles and not voting for a lesser evil will destroy America as we know it.
Somebody forget the words “Barf Alert” in the title?
