Gun Buyback Boondoggle
East Bay Express ^ | 2/12/8 | Robert Gammon

State Senate Boss Don Perata's gun buyback event last Saturday may cost the city of Oakland $170,000 because it attracted too many guns, the Oakland Tribune reported today. Reporters Cecily Burt and Jenna Loceff noted that the first two people in line at one of the buyback centers were "gun dealers with 60 guns in the trunk of their car." Organizers instituted a five-gun limit, but the event still drew more than 1,000 guns — 700 more than Perata had bargained for or raised money to buy. That meant Oakland police had to hand out vouchers valued at $170,000. Gun dealers were attracted to Perata's promise to pay $250 per gun and arrived with weapons they couldn't sell elsewhere. The event was supposed to remove guns from the streets of Oakland in Perata's attempt to stem violence, but one Trib reader summed up the outcome: "I don't see how getting guns off the streets of Fresno and other cities will help cut crime in Oakland."

SWEET! Brand new Hi-Point .45s cost ~$150 with shipping... if they’re paying $250 per gun, someone could turn a tidy profit at the expense of the city’s taxpayers!

I still have a .25 auto in the box and the price is on the top of the lid. 49 dollars. I’m sure you can find some Locins or Ravens for less than a hundred.

This turned out even better than I expected. Oakland PD is now on the hook for 170 grand that they don’t have, a bunch of worthless junkers are off the street and then there was this quote from Perate from another source:

”Well, I wasn’t expecting a bunch of gang-bangers to show up with their pants at half-mast, turning in their weapons. But these guns come from somewhere, out of someone’s home. They usually were taken from someone who has a gun for protection, but really will never be protected by it,” said Perata.

“...will never be protected by it.” No sh*t Sherlock! They just put the gun in a barrel behind the church!

And of course, Oaklanders celebrated the buy back in their own special way by shooting six, killing three.

Way to go lefties...

Well, not anymore, anyway.
