Now that McCain has the nomination, would Mark Sanford be a good VP to balance the ticket? I don't live in SC so I don't know details about him other than he seems to be popular, has good conservative credentials when he was in Congress, and is a pork buster.

I say vote Huck, get a contested convention, and have Romney’s delegates introduce Sanford’s names outright for the nomination.
The WSJ suggested him in an editorial today - I like what I’ve heard so far ...
No disrespect to Sanford but the only Republican who by being VP will compel me to vote McCain is JC Watts.
and that only because I want to see him leveraged into the spotlight as the new face of conservatism for the next generation.

Clearly with 10M+ votes cast, McCain and Romney are the biggest vote getters with 4.8M and 4.3M respectively. Huckabee is one-half that.
Again McCain and Romney have the most States (1st, 2nd & 3rd Place) in their colum with 26 and 28 respectively. Huckabee is at 21.
These are the front runners, like it or not. Regardless of whose choice it was ... read the MSM and the Party.
The GOP must have the strongest ticket in order for that ticket to be competitive against the Dems. Chosing a non-nationwide figure, chosing someone who has no stature in the eyes of the entire county's voters ... is an out right admission that you are seeking to lose. Cause the GOP Convention is the beginning of September 2008. The General Election is Novenber 4th ... a weak ticket or a brokered ticket can not have 30 days to campaign and win.
Having a Thompson/Romney or Thompson/Hunter (or visa versa) ticket come out of the convention would not enhace the GOP chances of beating the Dem ticket at this point. Also, as noted above, it would give a very short run at the voters compared to those who have already been before them since last year. Equivalent to starting over, a real handicap. Besides a brokered convention is not going to happen.
The ticket for the November General Election at this point is logocally, numbers wise and already accepted by the people, McCain/Romney. I don't believe that even having Duncan Hunter in the VP spot would enhance the tickets chances.
We must, even though it is not perfect, rally to the party and not the nominee. If you desert the party, because they deserted you, tou guarantee socialism in America in the very near future. If you do chose this option you have no right to complain about the outcome (although we know many will).
