Let's try to Stop John McCain from getting the GOP nomination (vanity)

Posted on 01/29/2008 10:25:56 PM PST by Sun

It's far from over!

The candidate needs 1,191 delegates to win, and McCain has 97 and Romney has 74, and who knows how many candidates Huckabee will have after all is said and done.

Here's my letter to the editor, which I sent to a couple of newspapers in my area:

"Dear Editor:

While John McCain is a war hero, and I feel a better candidate than any of the Democrat candidates, I cannot vote for him on Super Tuesday.

Here are a few reasons why:

Senator McCain supports human embyronic stem cell research, and the ICC (where the International Criminal Court would be judging Americans). He also was part of the gang of 14, which has stopped President Bush's judicial nominess for circuit courts, etc. from going to the floor for an up or down vote.

I heard a couple of McCain's colleagues say on the radio that he went against the leadership, when the Republicans had the majority, including the culture issues.

John McCain is also the senator that liberal Democrats come to when they want a senator from the Republican side of the aisle. For instance: McCain/Feingold (limits free speech); McCain/Kennedy (amnesty); McCain/Lieberman (50 cents per gallon gas tax increase).

Senator McCain's pro-illegal immigration stance would hurt our national security, as border security is national security. Known terrorists have been caught crossing our borders."

Maybe you'll join me and write a letter to the editor of your own.

But how will it help conservatism to not vote in the primaries for the one who will do the least amount of damage to conservatism?

“I have to disagree Sun. I vote the Conservative line, not the party line. I won’t be voting for any of the GOP candidates as none of them are Conservative. The “vote the best candidate” thinking is precisely what has caused the GOP to have the current crop of candidates who have either held or do hold positions contrary to Conservatism. Settling for anything less than Conservatism only begets Socialism.”

Folks stayed home in 2006 to teach the Republicans a lesson, but now the Dems are in charge of the Judiciary Committee, and President Bush’s judicial nominees can’t make it to the floor for an up or down vote.

Well, it is a matter of degrees that are too small for me to care about.

I didn’t trust Mitt or Huck when they all the sudden tried to sound like conservatives, and I don’t trust them still.

All three believe global warming is a serious problem.

Mitt thinks the AWB is a good idea.

Huck and McCain both want to close Guantanamo and end waterboarding

Mitt and McCain are both China appeasers.

Huck wants to sit down for tea with the mullahs.

All three have more flip flops than a team of acrobats.

It goes on and on. I have no dog in this fight.

Huckabee is pro-life, very strong on the 2nd amendment and is the best candidate remaining re: China.

Romney will be far better on securing our borders than McCain - he has to if he want to be reelected.

Border security = national security

We will probably have two or more vacancies in the U.S. Supreme Court very soon.

Who do you think McCain would pick when he said that Alito wears his conservatism on his sleeve?

“It is very hard for me to believe that all the citizens that fought amnesty are now going to elect Mr. amnesty. I’m thinking many apathetic voters haven’t really paid attention and don’t realize McCain IS Mr. Amnesty. We need to educate them!”

Exactly. Most voters are basically good, but just need to be educated.

“At least until the full enactment of the Fairness Doctrine truly puts an end to “everything conservative”, including an end to Free Republic.”

That could happen. McCain/Feingold already put a huge dent in the First Amendment.

I refuse to parse it down to this degree. Each has fatal flaws. Are Huck and Mitt potentially better than Mccain. Sure. But not enough for me to try to pick which one. I hope McCain flops. But I have been hoping the same for Huck and Mitt as well. We are screwed, regardless.

Some folks did stay home but I wasn't one of them.

“I hope McCain flops.”

Well then write an editor’s letter to educate voters about him, and you don’t even have to say nice things about the other candidates. :)

My time for involvement in the primary ends with a vote for Hunter on the 9th.

Same here except on the 5th. On the 6th I'll be back at the registrars office changing my affiliation from Republican back to independent.

“My time for involvement in the primary ends with a vote for Hunter on the 9th.”

Even Hunter talked about supporting someone viable, and he endorsed Huckabee.

As Father Pavone of Priests for Life put it, we need to limit evil as much as we can.

“..More recently, Mr. McCain has told conservatives he would be happy to appoint the likes of Chief Justice John Roberts to the Supreme Court. But he indicated he might draw the line on a Samuel Alito, because “he wore his conservatism on his sleeve.”’

BUT at tonight’s debate, McCain said he would support judges like Roberts AND Alito, aka McCain got caught in a lie.

What happened to “straight talk,” Senator McCain?

You don't limit evil by allowing it to fester and grow incrementally year after year.

“Duncan Hunter was the most conservative candidate, and it broke my heart that he dropped out. Now my goal is to vote in the primaries for the best candidate remaining, and get some others to do the same.”

I agree with you for the reasons you cited in your article and more. I am not really for any of the GOP that are now running, but I see McCain as being the worst of those currently on the GOP ticket.

“Again I disagree. Hunter, Tanc & Fred may have had decent credentials, but they were horrible candidates. They built no grassroots organization whatsoever so their message was not heard by the large majority of primary voters. Fred did get heard, but was poor in the debates and on the stump. The message will always win when communicated well, and none of these guys were able to do it. Our problem is not Conservatism dying off, it’s having competent politicians promoting the message.”

I partially agree with you in that I do NOT think conservatisim is dying off. I, somewhat, disagree with you regarding whether the candidates communicated well.

This election has been largely about 1, and only 1 thing. Whether or not to elect Hillary. Many chose to back Rudy when the polls said that only Rudy could beat Hillary in the general election. When the polls were reported that any of the GOP front runners could beat Hillary suddenly there were many people wiping their brow and saying to themselves, whew, I don’t have to vote for Rudy. At that point the party pretty much split between Huckabee and Romney, then McCain won in NH, and suddenly the polls said only McCain could beat Hillary. When McCain followed up with a win in SC, others jumped on his bandwagon, based to some extent on the new polls showing only McCain could beat Hillary. Florida fell for it. I hope this nation stops presuming polls don’t change and starts thinking.

We have had some good to very good candidates drop out because the real issue this election is to beat Hillary, not to promote conservatism. I blame the LSM and the Dems for the vast majority of this non-thinking by conservatives.

“Regardless of which of these Bozos gets elected, FR is going to be a busy place. If McCain is elected, we’re going to be fighting against amnesty, global warming nonsense, liberal judges, tax increases, further encroachments on our rights, etc. If it’s Romney, we’ll be fighting against RomneyCare, federal corporate bailouts, and any number of big government nanny-state programs. If it’s Huckabee all of the above applies. If it’s Paul we’ll be fighting for our lives.

If it’s Clinton or Obama, well, we’ll be fighting against all of the above, fighting for our lives, and fighting against a total Marxist takeover.”

Is there anyone else running who is worth considering?
