The compost stuff we carry is put out by Hi-Yield. It’s called Compost Maker. Doesn’t say anywhere that I can find what is in it. I’m sure there are lots of others out there. Good luck!
I use rebar to keep my tomato plants also. I had a problem with birds also. I took a length of twine and tied it along the tops of the rebar (connecting all the rebars together) and then got some old CD-Rom disks and hung them from the twine between the plants. Let the breeze just spin them around, no birds. When the tomatos got to high for the disks to spin I just placed a few rebar away from the plants and then hung the CD-Roms. Worked for me.
Now this would DEFINITELY interest “SweetiePie” here...I was talking to her about this just awhile ago and will set her up an FR login.
So Gabz...you gonna start a gardening group? :-)
If you mean a "gardening group" as in maintain a ping list for these kind of threads, the answer is yes. If you mean an actual group that actually gets together for *gasp* meetings, NO!!!
LOL!
The leaves are hairy like okra and they make me itch like crazy. The sap is like latex—white and very sticky. Just about impossible to get off your hands or pruning shears, etc.
tubebender - thanks for that link to Dripworks, irrigation is one of my biggest challenges.
CID — you’ve been added to the list, and thanks for the explanation of your screen name!!!
You’ve been added to the list. I think we’re going to have a lot of fun, and I’ve alrady learned a whole bunch of stuff I never knew!!!

Wow. I had no idea. We have hummingbird moths here, and their numbers appear to be increasing. Thanks for the tip!
Thank you for the fig link!!!!
When you get her all signed up, let me know her screen name so I can add her to the list. I’ve already put you on it ***evil grin***
I’ll do it! I’ve been trying to get it done the past 20 minutes or so but my ADD/ADHD is giving me fits this morning! :-)
Good thing I’m not a cat—my curiosity would have long since been the death of me! I google something to find an answer, and then I get sidetracked. I know more useless info than anyone has a right to!
LOL!!! You and me both. I often have my husband do google searches for me, for just that reason!!!
In my case, both. The first time that I picked figs, which was about 3 years ago, my arms were bright red all the way to my elbows and itched more intensely than anything I had ever known. A friend of mine who is a nurse practitioner said that I was particularly sensitive to the plant. Now I wear long sleeves and non-latex Nitrile gloves anywhere near a fig.
As a couple of folks have mentioned upthread, the figs have a sap similar to latex. I am highly allergic to latex, so maybe that is what makes me so sensitive to the fig fruit itself. When I pick, peel or cook I have to be wearing gloves. If I handle them without gloves it feels as though I have dipped my hands in acid. :(
Of course, I should be on your ping list too.
LOL!!! With such a screen name, I imagine so!!!!
please add me to your gardening ping list ... I finally have some room for a garden and should get started.
