He froze up conservative money through the early campaign season and dissuaded dark horse conservatives from testing the waters The problem with this theory is that Fred didn't emerge until LATE in the campaign season.
Where were these dark horse conservatives who were supposedly willing to undertake a run for the presidency early in the process, before Fred appeared on the horizon?

Fred was being discussed all of 2007 (as I remember it). From January on. Why would a little known (nationally) Governor jump in if he was afraid a conservative celebrity would just make mincemeat of him anyway? I think he froze out money and candidates.
