Open Letter to the New Hampshire GOP – Choose the Real Conservative, Duncan Hunter

Why should Iowa have all the fun tonight--take that New Hampshire!

Alexander J. Madison - December 31, 2007

Dear New Hampshire Republicans,

Every presidential election season, your state, by virtue of its early primary vote, has the opportunity to help shape the election going forward. At times, you were the antidote to the Iowa Caucuses. In 1980, Iowa chose moderate GHW Bush, New Hampshire chose Ronald Reagan, giving the Gipper a much needed boost. For that, we are eternally grateful. In 1996, you bucked the polls and chose Pat Buchanan over the milquetoast Bob Dole. Though Buchanan had and has his own issues, the one area where he did trump all the others was a real understanding what illegal immigration was doing to our country. Now, 12 years later, that problem that Buchanan warned about has come home to roost. And you have the opportunity to select a candidate that has been even more stalwart than Buchanan, or anyone else in politics for the last 26 years for that matter, on fighting the scourge of illegal immigration. Duncan Hunter even opposed the 1986 Reagan Amnesty (Simpson –Mazzoli), something Buchanan was pushing as Reagan’s Communications Director. As Pat found out, Hunter’s arm don’t twist.

Whereas Mr. Buchanan has managed to put himself into the fringes of the Republican Party in recent years, Hunter has held true to the Reagan vision of Peace through Strength, confronting our enemies, and shrinking the federal leviathan, in addition to being the true leader on immigration reform.

Hunter is the only candidate who understands that communist China is preparing for war, while we foolishly allow massive transfers of technology and manufacturing prowess to move from our shores to theirs. Hunter vociferously opposed Clinton’s ‘Permanent Normal Trade Relations’ gift to the chicoms, while Fred Thompson, John McCain, Mitt Romney, and Mike Huckabee all supported it.

China is not some land of consequence-free cheap labor, as the Wall Street Journal deems it. They demand technology for setting up shop on their soil. And many companies that have developed that technology through the hard work of American workers, have been all too eager to ‘share’ those trade secrets in order to boost short term profits. And what the Chinese do not get from the agreements with these outfits, they steal through industrial espionage, and have been doing so for many years. The current administration turns a blind eye to this malfeasance, and has yet to levy a consequential sanction on the communists for their continued piracy of 95% of our software (costing US companies billions in sales) and intellectual property. On top of all this, they devalue their currency to make their products more affordable than they already would be, with the long term goal of undermining US manufacturing. It is a game of world dominance the Chinese are playing, and only Duncan Hunter recognizes it, and vows to stop it dead in its tracks.

Mitt Romney cannot even find the courage to criticize his former company, Bain Capital, for partnering with a Peoples Liberation Army backed outfit to buy up 3COM, an American company that provides the Pentagon with critical security systems!!

But China is not the only threat. The current war against the islamo-fascists is still in its infancy. And aside from assuring complete victory in the battles for Afghanistan and Iraq, Duncan Hunter is the one man who will not bow to liberal and world opinion on how to fight this long war. Real human intelligence is one of the keys, and having Mike Huckabee and John McCain prancing around in front of the TV cameras calling for an end to waterboarding and for closing Gitmo because it “makes us look bad” is utter stupidity. Huckabee can almost be excused, since he has zero foreign policy experience and claims the NY Times’ Thomas Friedman as one of his mentors on foreign affairs. But McCain not only led the foolish fight to ban ‘torture’ – a crock in itself, which thankfully Duncan Hunter managed to insert some wiggle room – he was part and parcel of the cabal that was attempting to put our military’s intel under another layer of bureaucracy to satisfy the fools on the 9-11 commission, and he led the charge to give terrorist detainees Geneva Convention rights. Hunter fought and successfully defended the military’s position on these as well. As for Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney, they do not have a clue about military history, military capabilities, enemy combatants, military tribunals, our intelligence apparatus, or how to fire a Daisy BB gun for that matter.

While Hunter voluntarily suspended his college education to join the Army Rangers in Vietnam, the rest of the pack, other than McCain, found convenient ways to keep themselves out of harm’s way.

But if domestic policy is how you base your vote, that too should recommend Duncan Hunter.

No one is stronger on the second Amendment than Hunter. McCain and Romney and Rudy should be dismissed over this topic alone.

And for tax cuts, Hunter’s record is unmatched in the field. Huckabee, Romney, Rudy and McCain don’t even come close. Thompson is good, but certainly not better. Hunter vows to lower the taxes on our domestic manufacturers to zero, a move that would do more for the re-industrialization of America than anything the CATO Institute or the Wall Street Journal ever came up with.

Dealing with the farce called global warming, only Hunter stands out. The rest have succumbed to some measure of alarmism that would make Algore proud. McCain, Rudy, Mitt, and Huckabee all raised their hands at the last Iowa debate when the moderator asked for a show of hands for those who thought global warming was a ‘serious problem’. Huck and McCain vow to institute a mandatory ‘cap and trade’ system for CO2 emissions. And despite his defiance during that debate, Fred Thompson has the worst record of any of the candidates, co-sponsoring the most onerous global warming legislation in our nation’s history with his Title X Climate Change Policy in 2002.

On the sanctity of life and fighting the gay agenda, no one, not even Mr. Huckabee compares favorably to Duncan Hunter. Hunter has sponsored legislation for decades to give the unborn full constitutional protection. And he led the charge against the creeping gay agenda of Clinton’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy for our nation’s military, while the RINOs all folded.

And the surest way to decapitate the Department of Education, OSHA, the EPA and the Department of Energy, four of the most onerous bureaucracies in the federal arsenal, as well as the useless NEA, is to elect Duncan Hunter. Only Hunter is on record for wanting to either severely slash or eliminate these agencies. Huckabee wants to provide for more arts and music in the schools, McCain is an EPA cheerleader, and Thompson for all of his government reform reputation, voted in funding for the NEA after they agreed to spread their goodies to rural areas. Go figure.

Fellow Republicans, you won’t find Hunter conjuring up ways to keep you from smoking in public, pushing to ban kids from eating Twinkies in school, proposing illegal alien Amnesty under some bucolic misnomer, attending a global warming summit, instituting mandatory health insurance, or signing away our sovereignty for the sake of some UN inspired security measure; but you will find him hard at work everyday to increase the size and lethality of our Armed Forces, building a double border fence on our southern border, kicking communists in the teeth – whether they are in Beijing or Caracas, and changing our tax policies to stimulate the manufacturing sector.

Ronald Wilson Reagan is not around to cast a vote this year, but he surely would be happy to see one of his staunchest allies elected in 2008. So join with Michael Reagan, Ann Coulter, Chuck Yeager, the late great Henry Hyde and Joseph Farrah, and let’s win another for the Gipper.

Most Sincerely,

Alexander J. Madison
