A man and his ex-wife are embroiled in a holy war over the issue of circumcising the couple's 12-year-old son.
The Oregon Supreme Court is now considering the case of James Boldt, a family-law attorney who converted to Judaism in 2004. He seeks to have the minor surgery performed against the wishes of the boy's mother, Lia Boldt, who is Russian Orthodox.
"It's the classic kind of decision a custodial parent would make," said James Boldt, according to the Oregonian newspaper.
Lia Boldt, 45, filed for divorce in 1998, and though she initially won custody, James Boldt, who now lives near Olympia, Wash., later gained it.
Mrs. Boldt's lawyer, Clayton Patrick, argued she should get a court hearing to try to prove circumcising a 12-year-old boy poses serious health risks. He also maintained the boy is afraid to tell his father he doesn't wish to go through with the surgery.
"We're not talking about an infant circumcision here," said Patrick. "She's entitled to a hearing."

Cut the dolphin??? What is the dolphin, and what is the reasoning behind this?
Everything is relative, besides, there are many atheists that find a lot of thing to be unacceptable...one doesn’t need a belief in God to have a moral code.
???
Dolphin = penis.
Thanks for calling my religion stupid. G-d expressed his opinion when he included the commandment that all Jewish males be circumcised in the Torah. It's quite clear and explicit about removing the foreskin. So, I guess, for whatever reasons He has, G-d cares.
I don’t really know the father’s reasons for wanting circumcision for the boy and I’m not justifying it one way or another. I know the mother is against it and has her reasons too. But you seem a little over the top to say that the circumcision is intended to “chop the wife out of the boys life” and so on. Really, the wife can’t have a relationship with the son because he’s circumcised? The particular configuration of his penis will cause her to reject him or vice versa? Whacky.
Priceless.
I have seen parents do many whacky things in order to isolate the non-custodial parent from the child(ren).
Religious “not one of us” tactics is a very common one. Mommy/Daddy is eeeeevil because he/she is not like us. The principle is sound and something the courts have to constantly struggle with.
The real issue is the fact that the court would not even give her a hearing to make her case. Essentially the courts have endorsed the father’s religious perspective over the mothers. As the case law indicates, a dangerous encroachment on first amendment issue.
Everyone has their own beliefs. Sorry if you were offended, but it really seems strange and makes no sense, that God would create us with a foreskin, then say it should be cut off.
I appreciate the apology and even understand your perception of the counterintuitive nature of circumcision. As the saying goes, G-d works in mysterious ways...
That’s for sure, and I believe that is a big reason for all the problems we, as humans have.
