The "Other" California Dairy Speaks Out: "They Seem to Want to Totally Destroy Us Personally"
The Complete Patient ^ | Nov. 7, 2007 | David E. Gumpert

It’s not been an easy year for Ronald Garthwaite, the owner of Claravale Farm, California’s “other” producer of raw milk, with about 50 cows and five per cent of the market after Organic Pastures.

Last June, he had to sell his Santa Cruz County farm because he was unable to get local officials to approve the permits he needed to continue in operation. He moved to San Benito County and quickly obtained all the permits and seemed to finally have found a new and welcoming home, with his partner, Collette Cassidy.

As part of the move, he built a new dairy facility—investing on the order of $1 million. Then came the late-October surprise of AB 1735, the legislation that sets a 10-coliform-per-milliliter limit on raw milk.

Too often, “state government employee” = “petty tyrant.”

what do your customers believe is a health benefit of drinking un-pasteurized milk?

(I don’t even care what your own opinion or stance is, because your bias is obvious and understandable)

Same legislators are totally suportive of mothers breast feeding.
Having been raised on a dairy farm, the milk from a cow is just as safe as mother’s milk, IMO.

Here is another candidate for a move to another state.

I’m not sure that I understand the question about the health benefits of drinking unpasteurized milk. Why would a person look for health benefits for one form of milk over another unless they already thought they knew the answer?

In fact, the state has an unproven, in fact untested, notion that current pasteurized milk products have health benefits. This notion justifies, in their eyes, limits on producers and consumers. Surely the burden of proof is on the advocates of this notion, not on the consumers who wish to buy their preferred product for reasons of their own.

I prefer raw milk to pasteurized, pasteurized to homogenized, homogenized to dried, dried to condensed and so on. No one asks why I think that dried milk is healthier than condensed milk. I don’t think any such thing. My preferences are based on taste, convenience, etc.

Raw milk is a good think in my thinking. I want the opportunity to buy it. I and the author of the piece share this particular bias if you want to call my desire for freedom a bias.

“I want the opportunity to buy it.”

LOL......buy all you like.......I don’t much care what you drink, buy, or sell.

Maybe someone else will answer my question.

I don’t have customers, since I don’t sell raw milk. I’ve seen dozens of customer testimonials written on behalf of raw milk producers, and these customers seem to highly value raw milk for improving their health and helping combat certain conditions like asthma, colitis, and allergies.
