I have not seen before this comparisons to slavery, but the term “peculiar institution” does indeed fit the awkward situation of hiring imported illegal aliens on a systematic.

It is an economic system that we should not be proud of.

Around 488,000 people fled the country for fear of being apprehended. Operation Wetback deported around 80,000 Mexican nationals in the space of almost a year, local INS officials estimated that an additional 500,000-700,000 had fled to Mexico before the campaign began.

And that's how getting rid of illegals would work. We don't need to deport them all, obviously. It looks like, from the above numbers, about 75% of illegals left on their own, even before Operation Wetback began.
