I remember during the run up to the 2004 election everyone talked about ow the Democrats were divided and had no unity to speak of. How quickly has the shoe moved to the other foot.

You say sheep, I say lemmings; what we need is a Reagan like person to galvanize the base and return the GOP to its conservative roots.

Just imagine the bureaucracy that will be created to run this comprehensive immigration plan. Enough jobs will probably be created for every illegal that is in the country today and for all of their realtives and so on.

It's to be part of his legacy. He wants the new demographic majority that he purposely created by keeping the borders wide open to write nice things about him 30 years from now.

A couple of years ago I thought he would have a very good legacy but he has all but destroyed himself in the eyes of future historians.

The illegals have taken all the construction jobs, many manufacturing jobs and treat beginning jobs our kids used to start with as career jobs.

IMO their presence destroys our education system which pays out about 14k per illegal kid.
They also dumb down the class rooms.

They also prevent citizen kids from going out and getting their first part time job.
What kid wants to work next to an illegal? It is embarrassing for them, and often it causes the place to speak Spanish only in the workplace.

It’s all problematic IMO.

Agree 100%. What we need to do is indicate that this issue is a make-or-break one for every GOP senator and rep.

Though I doubt they care much about contributions from the small fry, and big business is solidly behind this bill as it provides plentiful cheap labor to grind up. Very tough particularly in states with agriculture and chicken/beef processing.

I have noticed the trend in my neighborhood as well. The fast food places used to be full of high school kids and now they are full of Mexicans. I used to see my neighbor’s kids in the drive through and now I can’t understand a word they say when I order. They don’t live in the area, they just commute to work at the local fast food places or hang out at the Home Depot looking for day work.

If the article I cited is correct then they have lost 40% of their small contributors. Individually this is not much, but collectively it has to hurt.

Immigration reform should be two or three things.

#1 Secure the border with lots of new walls and border guards who don’t get jailed for shooting at bad folks with weapons.
#2 Fine the hell out of employers of illegals.
#3 As illegals are found, create a two week process where they are held, have their day in court if need be and then kick them out. With a good wall and enforcement, coming back should be tougher.

[fred thompson] Not if any kind of amnesty passes before the election. I seriously doubt people will forget that easily

If amnesty passes and George Bush signs it, there will be hell to pay and Republicans will be getting the bill. That means any candidate with an (R) after his name, including (unfortunately) Fred Thompson will be sunk.

I guess in this game of "chicken" which the alleged Republican "leadership" is playing against it's constituents (dismissively called "the base"), they are willing to gamble the entire Party and many years of elected office in favor of the American Meat Institute, the American Home Builders Association, and that corrupt criminal enterprise called the Mexican government.

All Republicans and conservatives will be called upon to make some very serious decisions of conscience and principle in a matter of weeks.
