Your detective work sounds like what I have done with James Jones. I tracked down many people and places that he based his fiction on. Almost ALL Jones' characters are based on real people. He even based the Jamaica of "Go to the Widowmaker" on Haiti. Believe it or not, Haiti back in the 50s was a popular tourist destination among the celebs. Some of Jones references in his books are fairly obvious. The town of Israel, Illinois in "Some Came Running" was obviously Palestine, Illinois. The brother the main character in that same book disliked was really the uncle of James Jones that he disliked. The people of Robinson, IL were very disturbed by that book after it was published since it revealed many private things about them. At the time, critics HATED "Some Came Running" because they thought it lacked the "big" theme of "From Here To Eternity." However, if the literary critics of today take a close look at "Some Came Running" (hopefully they can find the ORIGINAL unabridged copy), they will find it a fascinating look at postwar America of the late 1940s. The little stuff that the critics back then complained about is actually what makes this book quite fascinating. For example, the car trip that Dave Hirsch and 'Bama Dillert take from IL to Miami Beach. It is a fantastic look at car travel before the advent of the Interstate Highway System. Oh, and I tracked down the real name of the fictious town in North Florida referred to in the book.

Well, sorry for going overboard on James Jones but if you read his novels I think you will be AMAZED by how incredible they are.

FUn FACT: James Jones scored HIGHEST in literary aptitude in the history of the U.S. Army.

That’s possible. I had the same thought.

It can be tough to tell the difference between situtations that are coincidence and situations that are purposeful, don’t you think?

Thanks for the post and your insights. I had detected a high level of critical reasoning in your hypothesis, so it doesn’t surprise me that you spend a lot of time in inductive pursuits.

I have found 3 intriguing inductive areas which sometimes do bear fruit: Politics (hence, this forum); spirituality, like you, starting with the reason Jesus was put to death; and, um, well for this third topic you might try a few web searches on “boundary layer” + “Renato Vesco” + electrogravitics and follow your nose.
