Yes change the way you calculate overweight and of course the numbers will rise. Before BMI, the numbers were not that bad, but change calculations and suddenly you have an epidemic. Man whay people will do for money. It is sad that the American population buys into this crap!!!!

Times are a changing. We no longer do jobs of old. Technology has increased and helped us in many ways. However, if you continue to eat the calorie intake of someone who needed that amount for a fulls day work, then you will get fat. That simple.

Go measure the Amish, and measure year after year. They probably don’t change, size wise. However, many people don’t want to plow a field without a tractor these days or cut firewood and do manual labor.

Look at what redefining high cholesterol did for the pharmaceutical industry.

Nevertheless, obesity is highly visible without blood tests or redfinition, and visitors to the US often are quick to notice it. Regardless of what the medical industry says, I suspect anyone who has been a sales clerk in a clothing store for their career could make an interesting Excel spreadsheet that would probably track that definition.

Visiting my niece on campus reinforced the impression. I knew what people looked like two generations ago, because I looked at the time...There really is not any doubt.

The BMI is ridiculous since it makes everyone except a skeletal vegan overweight but there are some seriously fat people out there as well - people so fat they can barely walk anymore.

The number of Americans 100 pounds or more overweight increased 50 percent from 2000 to 2005, twice as fast as moderately obese people.

BMI notwithstanding, if you're anywhere in the neighborhood of over 100lbs overweight, you're obese, no matter how you slice it.

The Army, for example, has very detailed height/weight standards. Sometimes, very muscular people run afowl of those guidelines. Often, people that aren't really what anyone would call fat are a few pounds over the limit. This has been a cause for a lot of complaining about the definition of 'fat' within the Army. Some of the biggest, toughest guys in the military haven't made their 'ideal' weight for years, and have to get taped for body fat. (A demeaning process for a large weightlifter who could crush dozens of the scrawny long distance runners who the Army loves).

That said, that's in an industry where fat and muscle are common issues, usually quibbling over a few pounds. Like, in the single digits. Not the double or triple. These numbers may be a little skewed on the high end, but there's no question that Americas overall are getting fatter. While there are people who are simply very muscular, or have genetic problems, overall, it's just people who eat too much of the wrong foods and don't exercise enough.

Been to a Wal-Mart or amusement park lately?

Gigantic two-legged manatees sipping a 64 ounce sodas and eating candy, wondering why they’re fat.

According to the BMI, President Bush is overweight and on the line for obese. Does that make sense. Buckhead, you are right that there are some severely overweight people especially amusement parks and walmart, but I still think that they inflat the numbers by a huge margin.

And then there's this:

Amusement Park Responsible for Injuries to Obese Patron

On March 12, 2004, a New York jury found Six Flags Darien Lake liable for injuries sustained by a 395-pound man when he was ejected from the Superman – Ride of Steel coaster in May 1999. The jury awarded $3.7 million in damages to the plaintiff, Michael Dwaileebe, and $250,000 to his spouse. Although the jury assigned 10% of the negligence to the ride manufacturer, Switzerland-based Intamin AG, it also found that the manufacturer’s negligence was not a proximate cause of the accident.

According to Dwaileebe, the T-bar lap restraint did not close sufficiently due to his size, resulting in his being ejected when the roller coaster traveled through a “camel hump” hill. The amusement park claimed that the manufacturer should have used a different lap bar configuration, and should have provided better training to the park employees, but the jury apparently accepted the manufacturer’s position that the restraint was properly designed, and that it had provided adequate training and documentation to the park employees.

Bingo. You could even look at film taken at Disneyland in the 1950s, and then go yourself today. I've never seen images of fat people in the past in any number that rival what you could see today at any given all-you-can-eat buffett.

If he'd landed on someone, I wonder if they could sue him for being almost 400 pounds?

The man should have a “would-be-diamond” award presented to him. Isn’t it the patron’s, as well as the park attendants’ responsibility to see that they are fastened in correctly? Did he have a death wish?

There is an epidemic of truly obese people in this country, and it doesn't make any difference how you calculate the numbers. Trying to accommodate the growing numbers of hippos is a problem in every industry that has to provide seating for people--airlines, theaters, stadiums, etc. People on average truly are bigger and fatter than they were fifty years ago.

fat people are abusing their bodies the same way someone smoking crack or shooting heroin is, if you want to see gross examples of obesity and gluttony go to the cheapest buffet in town and watch what waddles up, these are the same people that go around saying “I don’t know why I am so fat I really don’t eat that much”

The movement of super obese bodies causes the atmosphere surrounding them to rise in temperature; The aggregate result of this is global warming.

The best thing is that they’ve basically cut PE out of elementary, high school, and college. Not surprising what results we get.
