Unless you happen to KNOW them, instead of just reading about them in the WAPO.

Since people have very different definitions of "beautiful" and at least of what types of intelligence are most desirable, there's little danger that individual free choice in these matters will result in a population of nearly identical people. Besides, people have been engaging in genetic engineering since the dawn of human existence, by choosing mates who meet their personal definitions of beautiful, intelligent, desirable, etc. There is ZERO connection between Hitler-type government-directed breeding to "improve the race", and individual choice in the characteristics one prefers in one's children. The result of improved technology in genetic choice in children will be a generally healthier, more intelligent population, that is less easily led into supporting the constant expansion of nanny-state programs. This is a GOOD thing.

My problem with this is that we don't know what we are really doing when we start to play around with genes.

Yes this one gene causes you to have green eyes, but what else does it do?

The human being is a tapestry of millions and millions of threads all woven together in a complex knitting that we have yet to begin to understand. Merrily snipping threads out and weaving new ones in when we have no idea what we are doing is something that could easily end in tragedy.

If there were no stupid people, we would have no measuring stick by which to measure 'smart'. Same with ugly people.
Standards mean: 'compared with what?'

How about accepting what God gives you and not trying to play God yourselves by "engineering" children? True happiness isn't having what you want, but wanting what you have.. I have one disabled child and one non-disabled child. Both are happy, succesful, God-loving and well adjusted children. I wouldn't change either of them for the world.. the disabled one is more mature and emotionally stronger for the challenges she's faced, the non-disabled one has a good heart and is greatful for the gifts she's been given by God. but She has had to learn that Good is more important than pretty or smart.
Hitler was looking for the master race, I don't see any difference in parents who want genetically "perfect" children..

the joke is often on the beautiful smart folks -that's what I'm talking about.

They're often the ones making a$$es out of themselves assuming they are honoring people with their presence, when in reality people cringe when they see them coming.

Charlie Sheen is nice to look at, but - no thanks.

Peter Singer (sp?) is highly intelligent, but again - no thanks.
