Come along with me if you will, to a time long ago. Well, actually just a few months ago. But apparently, it was seemingly a more innocent age:
On the July 27, 2006 edition of MSNBC's Hardball, host Chris Matthews asked Ann Coulter, "How do you know that [former President] Bill Clinton is gay?" -- referring to her comment the night before on CNBC's The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch that Clinton "show[s] some level of latent homosexuality."
Coulter responded, "I don't know if he's gay. But [former Vice President] Al Gore -- total fag."
She went on to defend her theory about Clinton's sexuality by stating that "everyone has always known, widely promiscuous heterosexual men have, as I say, a whiff of the bathhouse about them."
Coulter claimed she was "just kidding" about Gore, but said of her theory about Clinton, "It's not only not a joke, it's not even surprising."
As the world now knows, Ann Coulter made a similar joke at CPAC a couple of days ago. But this time our watchdog media were looking for dirt from CPAC, so they latched upon her joke, and pretended she was calling Edwards a faggot -- and of course indulging in hate speech.
But where was their outrage last July?
Where was outrage here at Free Republic?
(I believe some of the members of the audience were even Freepers.)
How time flies.
"The difference is this: When she makes a statement like that on Hardball, our candidates are not forced to apologize for her.
When she makes a "faggot" statement from the same stage as our candidates, they ARE forced to respond."
And by "statement" you mean joke.
Why were the candidates forced to respond?
Last year Ann Coulter called (some) Arab terrorists "ragheads."
Which candidates were "forced" to respond to that statement?
And where is this law written, and who does the "forcing?"
Keep talking. Please, keep talking. The more you do, the more easily people can identify just who/what you are: A spoiled little boy who's just so mad that people won't see things his way.
I just do not understand your point of view. I am very grateful to Ann Coulter for all her support on issues I care about. She doesn't NEED attention. She is working for a cause. Sadly, there are too many ungrateful and overly sensitive people in the world. I guess so what about free speech when there is no communication anyway. It is all about what you cannot say. You can DO anything. You just can't say what you really think -- or tell a silly joke. I guess the need for some sort of ethics code is hard wired in our brains. So when the pressure to toss out all moral standards starts winning, everyone has to redirect their attentions elsewhere. So now the great evils we fight are all speech related. Of course you can say about anything to corrupt the mind of a child and that's fine. But oh how you had better not offend the protected classes. What a sorry bunch of people we've become.
She should know that all of her comments will get greater scrutiny when she is sharing the stage with the next Republican presidential candidate.
It's kind of hard for them to avoid her comments when they are at the same convention, speaking from the same podium.
She is old enough to know the difference.
Sorry, but I believe in freedom, but not license. You clearly, at least according to the final line of your post, don't share my conservative standards.
I do not respect Ann Coulter because of the kinds of things she says.
Please allow me to have this opinion as a moral conservative. That's where it's coming from. Not from censorship, nor political correctness. From my conservative values, and my sense that she says what she does just to get her name in the news.
There's more than one contemporary definition for "fag" or "faggot". In modern usage, it also means effete, ineffectual, and useless as tits on a boar.
I ain't asking...........but perversion is perversion, and NOTHING would surprise me about the debauched one.
And of course her point was to mock what the actor had been sent to rehab for doing -- whatever definition of faggot he was using.
Agreed. I don't respect her for the kinds of things she says.
I respect her for the way she looks in a black mini-skirt.
LOL! I guess you like your women bony, eh?
unintentional irony BUMP
see tagline . . .
I can't believe she hasn't been sent to rehab yet.
:)
Are you telling me that you believe Coulter is above criticism? I think not.
I don't think myself perfect nor do I think myself above criticism. The difference is that I don't have a bunch of people who will jump to my defense when I make a mistake. I have to take my lumps like a big girl.
"I have to take my lumps like a big girl."
Hopefully Coulter will find a way to get in touch with you, so you can instruct her on how to take lumps.
God knows how she has made it this far without you.
"Irony is wasted on the stupid"
Man, have you ever got that right!
Because you guys just don't get it. You keep falling for this like Charlie Brown trying to kick Lucy's football. Besides, Ann didn't even call Edwards a faggot directly, her interpretation is that if she did, she'd be penalized by the thought police.
Conservatives keep fighting by British gentlemanly debating rules, we're going to keep losing battles to the Left.
Sam, you are too subtle for some, excellent comment by EEE.
Respectfully disagree with you here.
AC's edgy humor is her calling card. Her audience is composed primarily of college students and her competition is the likes of Bill Maher, comedy show john?, and that other dude stephen (schtick is to copy bill o'reilly).
If she were to lose that edge she'd blow all credibility with that group. Personally, I find her hilarious; remember the old Steve Martin comedy album "Comedy is not Pretty"? When I see AC do her thing, I'm reminded of a matador waving a red flag in front of the bull, taking the bull's strength and eventually beating strength thru guile.
I honestly hate metaphor's but AC is a lightening rod for the lefty haters--a position she revels in. There are plenty of obnoxious homophobes, even among us on this forum, to direct your fire at.
