In God We Trust, No More?

Have you seen the new US $1 coins? My first impression was that the coin was designed by a committee made up of ACLU members.

What's missing? Try finding the words "In God We Trust" on the new coin.

The words are not on the front, which features a awful likeness of George Washington. The words are not on the back, which features the Statue of Liberty.

Keep looking. You might need a magnifying glass.

I gave the coin to another person and asked them to find "In God We Trust" on it. It took them 1 minute and 15 seconds to find the inscription, but they weren't sure what the words said because they were so tiny.

The words "In God We Trust" are found on the edge of the coin.

"In God We Trust" has been our official national motto for 50 years and has been imprinted on US currency going back to 1864. Prominently featured on currency, until now.

These are the same words that the ACLU and atheists like Michael Newdow have tried for years to have removed from US currency and "The Pledge of Allegiance."

Will be interesting to see if this happens again with future currency issues in different denominations...

Find the national motto "E Pluribus Unum" on the new Dollar coin. Find the date. Whoa! Same place, on the edge of the coin! Sacrilege!

<sarc>

"In God We Trust" was put on our coins in 1864, and on paper money in 1957.

This is a bit of hysteria, if you ask me.

Maybe God's credit score dropped to an unacceptible level, and we simply can't "trust" anymore. He's gonna have to back it up with collateral.

Definitely aren't as pretty as Saint-Gaudens $20 gold piece, but might bring more collectors in.

Works good in giving change for a $20 bill at the post office stamp machine though

Like this nations trust in God, the words on the edge of the coin, will wear over time. SAD!

No, but my son the ten year old numismatist got one the weekend before they went public.

It is prettier than the Sac dollar, being plated in real gold, not just the parking token brass color.

If Europe can make 1 and 2 Euro coins, and Canada can make 1 and 2 dollar coins, why can't we, and stop printing paper dollars?

Every vending machine I've tried that has a dollar bill acceptor also has accepted the Sac and Susan B. coins.

Actually, this is not the first time a US coin has had edge enclused markings. The early 1800s Half Dollar had the words "FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR" on it's edge to detect if someone "shaved" some silver off of the rim of the coin. The rim marking will far outlast the face of the coin.

*sigh* We went over this whole thing last week, but here's another thread....

...including "edge is bad".

No, it's not only been done before, but do a bit of observation yourself.

How many '60s coins have you run across in change the last say 10-15 years? (Many, because the '60s had the highest production ever, esp. 1964.)

Note that the reeding on the coin edges is STILL THERE. And that's shallower than purposeful printing ever is.
